Oscar De La Hoya didn’t turn up to the Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn fight over concerns he would be ‘set up’ by Zuffa Boxing.Last month, Garcia knocked out Benn inside two rounds to retain his WBC welterweight title at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. Garcia made quick work of Benn in Las Vegas, but his promoter, De La Hoya, was abscent on the nightGettyDespite being the co-promoter of the event alongside Zuffa Boxing, Golden Boy CEO De La Hoya was nowhere to be seen during the build-up, or on the night. ‘King Ry’ had initially requested for De La Hoya to walk him out, but those plans changed on the morning of the fight.Esteemed boxing reporter Dan Rafael subsequently reported that De La Hoya had his credentials denied by Zuffa. Why did De La Hoya no-show Garcia vs Benn?Explaining his side of the story, De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV: “I wasn’t going to show up to be embarrassed. It was a Zuffa f****** event. “A ‘Zuffa event,’ a ‘Turki event’ [doing quotation marks with his hands]. “I was not going to show up and be embarrassed, because that’s exactly what they were going to do to me. “I was not going to do that. So I made the wise decision to not go.”De La Hoya’s concerns stem from his bitter feud with Zuffa co-founder and UFC president Dana White. The pair have been going back and forth for the best part of nine years and their rivalry has only intensified since White crossed over to boxing.“So much s*** happened in those dealings, in those contracts,” added De La Hoya.De La Hoya claims he was going to be set up if he turned up to Garcia vs BennGetty“But let’s just say I’m glad I didn’t go because I was going to be set up.“You saw Teofimo [Lopez], how they didn’t allow him in the ring to have a faceoff with Ryan, and embarrassed him not going up there. “It’s like, I’m not going to be embarrassed going to an event where my fighter is participating in. I just wasn’t going to do it.“It would have been embarrassing. It would have created distractions. It would have been a mess.”De La Hoya claims he wasn’t only member of the Golden Boy team that was subject to embarrassment.“My personnel were complaining about how they were being treated wrongly and how the event was just not professional. It was bad,” De La Hoya added.White and De La Hoya have been embroiled in a bitter feud for several years“How can you put Alexis Rocha with [Jose] Ramirez on the second fight of the night? They fought at what, 2pm?“What an embarrassment for the fighters, and how damaging that can be to the fighter’s reputation. Putting two world-class fighters in the start of the evening is not professional…“Most likely [they did this on purpose]. Absolutely, I believe so. ‘Oh, those are Oscar’s fighters, and they’re Golden Boy? “Let’s put them first so nobody will see them.’ Absolutely. I’m not born yesterday. I know how this works.”Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.
