Wrexham set for further boost to capacity in major Racecourse stadium update

Wrexham has confirmed council-approved plans for the installation of 2,250 extra seats in their new Kop Stand.Construction on the Kop began in December after a proposal for the addition of 5,500 new seats was given the green light by the Wrexham County Borough Council Planning Committee.Wrexham have announced that the Kop End will have a total capacity of 7,750 with the addition of 2,250 new seatsGettyHowever, the total capacity of the reconstructed stand on the south-east side of the ground is now set to increase to 7,750.Championship side Wrexham say the 2,250 new seats will sit in the second tier, and the overall capacity at the Racecourse Ground will grow over 18,000.“The increase in seating capacity in the new Kop Stand will allow the club to cater for the strong demand for tickets for home matches from local fans, as well as the many international fans that visit both the club and the City of Wrexham bringing with them much needed revenue for the local community,” a statement read.“A key part of the club’s submission was an updated Travel Plan that included a commitment to the strong promotion across all club channels for the continued use of public transport on match days.“These include the use of both bus and rail, with a close liaison with bus operators and Transport for Wales, and the continuation of the existing park and ride schemes plus the free parking option available exclusively on matchdays at Eagles Meadow.”Looking to the futureHollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have looked to redevelop the Racecourse Ground since completing their takeover in February 2021.The club then purchased the freehold 16 months later for a reported £2million from Wrexham Glyndwr University.Wrexham were controversially given an £18m grant in public money to help support the ground’s redevelopment.Former Welsh Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership, Jack Sargeant, defended the decision to award the funding.“It’s a really big development in the heart of Wrexham, it’s the whole city, it’s the gateway project,” he claimed.The Racecourse Ground will have a total capacity of over 18,000 once all the work has been completedGettyWrexham’s plans to upgrade the Racecourse Ground mark their continued intentions of earning promotion to the Premier League.They were promoted across three consecutive seasons from 2022/23 to 2024/25, rising from the National League to the Championship.However, they finished seventh in the league last season and missed out on the play-offs by two points.Wrexham are 14th with two wins from eight in the current campaign but are only three points adrift of eighth, which is one of two added play-off spots.An away clash at Derby County is their first test after the three-week international break on Saturday.Wrexham then host West Brom three days later, with the Kop Stand set to remain unfinished in the background.
