Liverpool signing is already one of the best in Europe and ‘enormous’ upgrade

Jeremy Jacquet will be one of Europe’s top five centre-backs if he maintains his trajectory, says European football expert Andy Brassell. The French star has seamlessly adapted to life as a Premier League player following his £55million move to Liverpool, with the club conceding just four goals from five league games.Jacquet had just 56 senior appearances under his belt prior to joining LiverpoolIn contrast, Chelsea, who backed out of a deal to sign Jacquet in January, have shipped a league-leading 12 goals in the same span.Jacquet’s bright start at Anfield prompted new France boss Zinedine Zidane to hand the defender his first international call-up.The 21-year-old went on to keep a clean sheet in his senior debut as France beat Belgium 1-0 and reprised his role for a 1-1 draw with Italy.Even though Jacquet’s international sample size is just 180 minutes, Brassell believes he’s shown more than enough to prove he belongs at the elite level.Andy Brassell’s verdict on Jeremy Jacquet“What’s clear is that even at this early stage in his international career, he feels an enormous upgrade on the players around him,” Brassell told talkSPORT.com.“Ibrahima Konate has not had his best year, both with Liverpool and Real Madrid, where he’s not exactly hit the ground runing. Dayot Upamecano is a great centre-back, but he has his moments where he switches off.“I think people are absolutely blown away by how he (Jacquet) stepped up. He was good for Rennes but I don’t think you can realistically expect a central defender of more experience than him to come into the Premier League and boss it like that straight away.“So, for someone of his age to do it is absolutely remarkable.”Zidane placing his faith in Jacquet is notable in itself.A former Ballon d’Or winner who went on to enjoy significant managerial success in charge of Real Madrid, Zidane knows all the qualities required to be considered a world class player.Zidane may view Jacquet as a first-choice centre-back going forwardGettyAs brilliant as Jacquet’s defensive abilities may be, Brassell pointed out that it’s an entirely different element to his game that Zidane may be particularly enamoured with. Why Zinedine Zidane ‘loves’ Jeremy Jacquet“He’s everything that Zidane loves,” Brassell said.“He’s physical, he’s composed on the ball, he’s a good leader. “And think of the players that Zidane has hung his hat on throughout his coaching career and the players that he’s been able to at Real Madrid. It’s not naive players by any stretch of the imagination. He expects a level of maturity more than most coaches do. And Jacquet has been able to meet that.“So if we’re talking about him as one of the best 5-10 centre-backs in Europe already, never mind just young players. I think if he continues like this, this season, he’s there, definitely. There’s no doubt about it.”Unfortunately Jacquet’s international break has not ended as planned, with the defender rested for France’s 4-1 win over Belgium on Monday due to a hamstring strain.Jacquet’s move to Liverpool was agreed before Iraola joined, but he’s already warmed to the defenderGettyJacquet’s potential injury comes ahead of Liverpool’s crunch clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.Should the centre-back miss out, Joe Gomez looms as an option to slot in alongside Virgil van Dijk.
