USMNT “will be ready with fresh energy” for Canada

The U.S. Men’s National Team may be tired on the tail-end of a busy four-match international window, but will be ready to end it on a winning note. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad faces off with CONCACAF rivals Canada on Tuesday, seeking to finish 4-0-0 over the two-week period. Fresh from a 3-0 victory over Mexico on Saturday, Pochettino’s squad should be brimming with confidence after extending their unbeaten run to three matches. Canada will provide another tough test for the Americans, but Pochettino knows its another good opportunity for his team to grow together. “It’s about to keep growing and I think supporting the players and to finish the [window] in a very good condition,” Pochettino said Monday during a press conference. “But I am sure that the players, even if we were competing a lot and traveling, that can affect, we are going to be ready for [Tuesday], with fresh energy. And I think it’s a good opportunity for continuous growing in that camp.”Tuesday will mark the first head-to-head meeting between the USMNT and Canada since Jesse Marsch’s side won 2-1 in the 2025 Nations League third-place match. Overall, the Canadians have won three of the last five meetings, including matches in World Cup Qualifying, Nations League and friendly play.Pochettino isn’t too concerned with the USMNT’s past history against Canada, believing that Tuesday’s match is key for both teams in their preparation for bigger competitions to come. “Every single game is different and it’s a different world,” Pochettino said. “We cannot connect the last game with the next one. We need to build our next game in the best way to try to be competitive and be sure that we can be close to win.“I think it’s complete a new cycle, even for Canada, for [manager Jesse Marsch],” Pochettino added. “I think the chapter was closed after the World Cup and now it’s a new chapter. I think that is all new. The group is different than when we faced Canada before. For Canada the same. I think it’s a new, a fresh start for every single country like Mexico also that we were playing. Even if Jesse was and we were, also the expectation and everything is start from front zero and I think it’s a fresh start. It’s nothing related with the game that we played before.”Canada is also unbeaten in the September-October window, defeating Chile 1-0 and Peru 2-0 over the past two weeks. Marsch has continued to rely heavily on many of his World Cup players such as Jonathan David, Jacob Shaffelburg, Stephen Eustaquio, while also sprinkling in some new faces as well. The USMNT-Canada rivalry has featured growing intensity since Marsch’s hiring by Canadian Soccer and Pochettino is aware of the challenge that they will bring at Allianz Field. “I know Jesse very well. I like him [as] a coach. Always difficult to play against teams that he coach,” Pochettino said. “He’s intense. Teams are aggressive. A good mix in between being aggressive without the ball and then when they try with the ball they have a lot of different [options] and then we need to be focused. And yes, it’s a very good challenge for us tomorrow and yes, hope that we can enjoy everything we can.”
