3D model (in street view) of the old Lidice village destroyed in the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia

I have been reading a lot of WW2 history lately, and I decided to do some exploring on Google Earth in relation to the history. I came across a pretty interesting sight in Lidice in the Czech Republic. If you go into street view on top of the sight of what used to be the old Lidice village, you will see a 3D modeled recreation of the village in its entirety. It's complete with a 1940's camera quality filter, too! For those who aren't aware, Lidice was a village in what was then Czechoslovakia that found itself at the center of Nazi atrocities in 1942. Reinhard Heydrich (one of the principal architects of the Holocaust, specifically the industrialized mass murder portion) was assassinated in the summer of 1942 by Czech and Slovak resistance fighters in a suburb of Prague, acting on the orders from the Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Nazi intelligence had falsely blamed the nearby villages of Lidice and Ležáky for having ties to the assassination, and thus, these villages were razed to the ground and its inhabitants slaughtered on the spot or deported to extermination camps. A new village was dedicated next to the site of the old one after the war ended. I thought this was a pretty interesting way to memorialize Lidice and the people who lived there! Even if it's not an actual photo of what the site looks like today. Coordinates: 50°08'29.11"N 14°12'00.23"E submitted by /u/SoBoundz to r/GoogleEarthFinds [link] [comments]
