Joanita Male – Head, High Net-Worth & Diaspora, dfcu BankUganda’s affluent market continues to grow and financial institutions including dfcu Bank continue to innovate and offer tailored solutions to this market segment. Business Focus interviewed Joanita Male, Head, High Net-worth & Diaspora at dfcu Bank, about affluent banking, wealth creation and Xclusive Banking. Excerpts: Qn: Why did dfcu Bank choose the recently held Captain’s Putter Golf Tournament as a platform to engage its high-net-worth clients?Answer: Golf provides a natural and comfortable environment for engaging clients and potential clients beyond the traditional banking setting. It brings together decision-makers, entrepreneurs, business leaders and professionals, creating an opportunity to deepen relationships and build meaningful connections. The inaugural Captain’s Putter Tournament was championed by Jimmy D. Mugerwa (Centre), Board Chairman of dfcu Limited and Captain of Serena Golf ClubFor us, it is about connecting with our clients through something they enjoy while also creating opportunities for them to connect with one another. These relationships are important because high-net-worth clients often value networks, access and opportunities alongside financial services.Qn: What are the key things affluent clients are looking for from their bank today?Answer: Affluent clients increasingly want access, relevance and personal relationships. They do not want a one-size-fits-all approach. They want a financial institution that understands their individual circumstances, financial goals and ambitions. They are looking for access to opportunities, connections and expert advice, as well as a more personal banking experience.Annet Kiconco (Right), Chief Retail Banking Officer at dfcu Bank pose for a photo with affluent customers at the eventOn the product side, they want investment solutions that can help them grow their money, plan for the future and transfer wealth. They also value premium lifestyle benefits such as travel benefits, airport lounge access, discounts and other conveniences, alongside investment options and competitive returns. At dfcu we are providing all that.Qn: How is Uganda’s affluent banking market changing?Answer: The market is growing and the pathways to wealth creation are becoming more diverse. We are seeing more young people creating wealth, women playing a bigger role in business and wealth creation, and stronger connections between the Ugandan diaspora and the local economy. Customers are also looking for more than premium service. They want expert advice, convenience, faster access and a banker who understands their broader financial goals. As a local bank, dfcu understands the Ugandan context and how wealth is created here. The Captain’s Putter reflects the philosophy behind dfcu Xclusive Banking, which recognises that meaningful relationships are built not only in boardrooms and offices, but also through shared experiences and trusted networks. That enables us to provide lending, investment and premium banking solutions that are relevant to our clients. If you compare today with about five years ago, affluent customers were more focused on keeping their money safe. Today, they are asking more questions about how they can grow their wealth, finance businesses and property, use digital solutions and gain exposure to alternative investment opportunities.Qn: What does dfcu’s Xclusive Banking offer to high-net-worth customers?Answer: We have designed dfcu Xclusive Banking around the needs of high-net-worth customers who require a more personalised banking experience. For salary clients, we generally define high-net-worth customers as those earning Shs15m or more per month, while business owners and self-employed customers qualify based on monthly turnover of Shs100m or more. The offering provides professional service, a dedicated relationship manager and access to premium benefits such as airport lounge access, higher card limits and embedded insurance. The relationship manager also acts as a connector, helping clients access experts within the bank and across the wider ecosystem where appropriate. Customers can open an Xclusive or Xclusive Plus account by engaging with the bank. Accounts can also be opened digitally, with customers subsequently onboarded onto our digital platforms. Our relationship managers can meet clients at their offices, branches or other convenient locations.Qn: What makes dfcu’s Xclusive Banking genuinely different from other premium banking propositions in the market?Answer: One of the key differentiators is our understanding of the Ugandan market. Many banks can bring premium solutions into the local market, but what is important is how those solutions respond to the way Ugandans actually create and build wealth. For example, one of the common things Ugandans do when they start making money is to invest in land. That is why we have solutions such as land loans, which respond to a very specific local wealth-building pattern. dfcu has been serving the Ugandan market for 62 years, and that gives us a deep understanding of the local market, our customers and how wealth is created in Uganda.Qn: With digital banking making transactions faster, why does relationship banking still matter for affluent customers?Answer: Digital banking has made transactions faster and more convenient, but financial decisions are often complex and personal. Every customer has different circumstances, goals and sources of income. For affluent customers in particular, there can be multiple avenues through which they earn and build wealth. They therefore need more than the ability to transact digitally. They need someone who understands their individual circumstances and can help tailor financial solutions to their goals. Digital banking provides convenience and speed, while relationship banking provides the personal understanding and advice that are important when making more complex financial decisions.Qn: What is dfcu’s ambition for Xclusive Banking over the next three to five years?Answer: Our ambition is to be a trusted financial partner for affluent and emerging affluent customers in Uganda. We want to deepen our advisory capabilities, strengthen our investment and wealth solutions and create stronger connections between our clients and opportunities both locally and within the diaspora. We also want our clients to have access to expert advice and the right networks as they build their businesses and wealth. We are not going to just be their bank. We want to be the bank that understands what they are building and helps them through that journey.
