Low-income NYC parents wait over a year for childcare assistance. Then Mayor Mamdani reveals 10K children are finally getting vouchers

New York City parents who have been waiting for childcare assistance for over a year are finally getting some relief. Mayor Mamdani announced on Monday that 10,000 children will be moved off the Child Care Assistance Program waitlist and will receive vouchers to help cover the cost of care, NY Daily News reported. This marks the first time enrollment has opened up for these families in 15 months, providing a much-needed boost for both parents and local childcare providers. The vouchers apply to children ages 6 weeks to 13 years old, with an extension available for those with disabilities. This program allows families to choose a private daycare that works for them while receiving a subsidy to offset the costs. The mayor has also made a key investment to ensure that families receiving these vouchers are no longer responsible for copays, which makes the care essentially free for those who qualify. During a news conference in the Bronx, Mamdani shared his perspective on the situation. “I have had the privilege of speaking with parents and childcare providers who have shared with me how much of a lifeline that program is. How painful it is for them or for their clients to be stuck on that waitlist with no end in sight,” Mamdani said. He followed up by saying, “Today, I am so proud to announce that there is light at the end of the voucher tunnel. For the first time in 15 months, New York City is taking children off the voucher waitlist. And this is only the beginning. We will continue to do so on a rolling basis.” The road to this announcement has been long Former Mayor Eric Adams originally closed the program to new low-income families in May 2025 because funding could not keep up with the spike in enrollment. Since then, over 29,000 children have ended up on the waitlist, a number that continues to grow daily. While Gov. Hochul provided funding last year to help families already in the program keep their vouchers, new applicants were locked out for months. Even with that funding, the administration waited until now to move families off the list. Mamdani explained that they spent months reviewing data on family uptake and attrition rates to ensure they were managing the funds correctly. The city wanted to be certain that the surge of families on cash assistance, which saw requirements reinstated following the COVID-19 pandemic, would not overwhelm the budget and threaten the vouchers of existing families. “In partnership with Mayor Mamdani, we’re building a childcare system that lifts up every family, from launching 2-K and expanding 3-K to moving families off waitlists and into high-quality care,” Hochul said in a statement. The benefits extend to childcare providers as well. Many of these businesses have struggled with vacancies because parents simply couldn’t afford the tuition without help. Emmy Liss, the city’s childcare czar, noted that providers are eager to fill those empty spots now that the vouchers are available. “Providers are just as excited as families with this news to be able to welcome families into their programs,” Liss said. If you are a parent on the waitlist, you can expect the application process to open up over the next few weeks. The city will continue to move families off the list on a rolling basis over the coming months. To help make the search easier, the administration has also added a new filter to their digital childcare map, which allows you to specifically find programs that accept these vouchers.
