Mills spent a season with the U’s before joining permanently at the start of last year, going on to play 43 times in the Championship last term and being named the club’s Player of the Season.However, after the club were relegated to League One, the 22-year-old’s future was thrown into doubt. Preston have had eyes on Mills this summer and they have got their man – but they’re going to have to wait for him.Oxford are currently blocked from making any signings after being placed under a transfer embargo in July, just two weeks after former Arsenal midfielder Ramsey was appointed manager.And due to that, the U’s have made a decision not to sell players either, to make sure their squad doesn’t get picked apart.So, Preston appear to have reached a compromise with their former Championship rivals, agreeing on a transfer for the future.What has Ramsey said about Mills?Ramsey revealed in a press conference ahead of his first game as a manager against MK Dons on Saturday: “Stan has agreed a deal to go to Preston in January and, listen, it’s far from ideal, I can totally understand that, one day before the beginning of the season.“What it does mean is we get Stan now for the next four, five months and then when January comes around, we’ll be in a completely different position where we can be really aggressive in the market and we’ll have to strengthen our squad.”View Tweet: https://x.com/bbcoxfordsport?ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwRamsey has admitted that the club can’t let any players leave while under embargoGetty“The statement has been pretty clear, that we’re retaining our squad,” Ramsey explained on Oxford’s stance.“We’re going to need every single one of them, with the situation we’re in and we can’t bring anybody in. “So, yeah, we’re going to need everybody available for that.”Keeping quiet Ramsey’s honest admission comes after Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom refused to give anything away regarding Mills.Heckingbottom said: “He’s not our player. I don’t talk about other clubs’ players. He’s not our player, that’s it.“I think if you asked me about him, I’d be comfortable speaking to you about him off record in terms of what I think of him as a lad and a player and what I see from him, but no, not our player, nothing there.”Mills was Oxford’s POTY last season and Preston have agreed to sign himPA“Will he be with us before the end of the window in terms of us being able to do a deal with him? I wouldn’t know until there’s anything to say, it’s pointless speaking.”Since those comments from the Preston boss, it seems a deal has been done with Mills, but with the future in mind. It means the forward is available for Oxford against MK Dons on Saturday, rather than for Preston against Bolton.
