Major works on Mater Dei Hospital’s first large-scale expansion since it opened 19 years ago are set to begin tomorrow, Health Minister Ian Borg has announced. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)The €120 million project is expected to take around three years to complete and will significantly increase the hospital’s capacity.Plans include doubling the size of the Emergency Department from 35 to 70 cubicles and adding 135 new beds, including dedicated psychiatric wards.According to Borg, the expansion will also bring physical and mental healthcare services together under one roof for the first time, marking a major development in Malta’s public healthcare system.The minister acknowledged that the works will inevitably cause disruption for staff, patients and visitors, urging anyone attending the hospital to follow the directions and instructions provided on site.He also reminded the public that non-emergency cases should not be taken to Mater Dei’s Emergency Department, encouraging people to call 1400 for guidance on the most appropriate healthcare service.Works are scheduled to begin on Monday 17th August.Do you think this investment will help ease pressure on Malta’s healthcare system?•
