A 15-year-old boy being held at Malta’s juvenile detention facility is suspected of having links to 764, an international online network associated with child exploitation, blackmail and the grooming of vulnerable minors into acts of self-harm and violence.According to a report by Times of Malta, investigators allegedly discovered videos on electronic devices belonging to the teenager that prompted concerns about possible connections to the network. Authorities are understood to have kept him separated from other young detainees amid fears he could pose a risk to them if the suspected links are confirmed.The boy was arraigned in May, but a court order prevents the publication of details relating to the charges against him or his identity.His parents have publicly criticised his treatment while in custody, claiming he has spent extended periods in isolation and has been “treated like a terrorist”. They have said they are not contesting the charges against their son but are challenging the conditions under which he is being held.The Home Affairs Ministry has previously stated that the restrictions imposed on the teenager are necessary and proportionate, adding that his routine has gradually been expanded to include supervised group sessions, access to a common room and recreational activities.The report also highlighted concerns raised by Europol about the 764 network, which authorities describe as a decentralised online community involved in child exploitation, cyber extortion and extremist content. Investigators across Europe have warned that the group targets vulnerable young people online and can use coercion and blackmail to maintain control over victims.Police investigations and court proceedings are ongoing.•
