Tottenham Hotspur will finally get their 2026/27 Premier League campaign underway on Saturday when they travel to face Brentford, with plenty to look out for after an unbeaten pre-season.It has been a wonderful pre-season run by Tottenham Hotspur, who remain unbeaten in the seven games they have played, winning five and drawing two. Those seven games would certainly have given Roberto De Zerbi a good idea of what he has to work with, while the players and supporters have also had a glimpse of the football the Italian is trying to inculcate at Spurs. After finishing 17th in each of the last two seasons, it already looks like things have massively improved under De Zerbi, who had a big hand in saving Tottenham from relegation last season. Now, the 47-year-old is finally ready to begin his first full season in charge, starting with a trip to the Gtech Community Stadium. Here are five things to look out for in Tottenham’s Premier League opener.Credit: @thatfootballphotog / InstagramWho is going to be the new Tottenham captain?Tottenham are all set to enter the 2026/27 season with their fourth official captain in the last five seasons following Cristian Romero’s departure to Atletico Madrid last week. There were claims that an official announcement on his replacement would be made soon after the Argentine’s exit, but the club are yet to confirm anything. That should surely change before Saturday’s fixture, though.James Maddison has looked like the most obvious candidate throughout the summer, but several things we have seen over the last few weeks suggest it may not be quite as straightforward as that. Ben Davies, for example, wore the armband against Hoffenheim in the second friendly despite Maddison starting the game. That makes Micky van de Ven the next likeliest candidate. The Dutchman has already hinted at taking on more of a leadership role at the club, while Tottenham appeared to suggest something similar when announcing his new contract last week. Pedro Porro is another option who should not be ruled out. Will Micky van de Ven, Mohammed Kudus, Dominic Solanke or Destiny Udogie make the squad?Apart from Dominic Solanke, who has featured twice in pre-season, playing one half against MK Dons before another against Chelsea, none of the other three have played a single minute across the seven games.Solanke is believed to have suffered an ankle injury earlier this month and was subsequently left out of the squad as a ‘precaution’. With Richarlison coming off some excellent scoring form during pre-season, he will likely get the nod ahead of the England international on Saturday.Destiny Udogie has been confirmed as fit by a Tottenham insider, while we are not aware of any injury concerns regarding Van de Ven either, with their lack of appearances so far simply down to their minutes being managed.Their exact return dates remain unknown, though, and it would be surprising to see either start at Brentford after so little action this summer. More importantly, neither has been spotted training with the team yet, although Mohammed Kudus has.The Ghana international has been out of action since the turn of the year and returned to full training earlier this month, but he wasn’t risked in any of the friendlies. We should get more clarity when the head coach speaks before the game later this week, but what a delight it would be to see Kudus start the season.Who starts at number 10: James Maddison, Conor Gallagher or Lucas Bergvall?Tottenham have spent £185m reinforcing their midfield this summer following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and with those additions has come a dilemma for De Zerbi over which number 10 should play alongside the pair.James Maddison would be the clear choice on his day, but the midfielder is still recovering from the ACL injury that kept him out for almost the entirety of last season. He also looked understandably short of sharpness against Hoffenheim on Sunday, having made his first start of pre-season in the 2-2 draw.Conor Gallagher has actually been the one to get the nod in the number 10 role for much of Spurs’ pre-season run, and he has been an absolute workhorse, even helping himself to a goal against Getafe. He clearly lacks the creativity required to be a top number 10, but he does seem the most sensible option compared to the other two at this stage. That is because even if Lucas Bergvall is a more creative player than Gallagher, the Swede himself prefers the number eight role. In fact, he was tried and tested, or better put, misprofiled as a number 10 last season under Thomas Frank, and according to reports, that was one of the reasons he wanted to leave the club this summer, having been given little training time as a number eight. The 20-year-old continues to be linked with a move away this summer, but that is unlikely to be sanctioned this week at least, so there is a fair chance he could start in the number 10 role.Credit: @thatfootballphotog / InstagramWill any new signings make it in time? There are less than two weeks left until the transfer window closes and Tottenham are expected to add three attackers before then, according to Fabrizio Romano. Two of those are wide players in Savinho and Cody Gakpo, with both having already agreed personal terms with Spurs. The club now need to strike agreements with their respective clubs.Savinho looks the most advanced at this stage, with reports suggesting the saga could finally end this week. The move depends on Manchester City securing a replacement first, though, and they have so far made little progress on that front. The same applies to Gakpo, although his situation is somewhat harder given Liverpool continue to insist that he is not for sale. That could change in the coming days or weeks as the Reds pursue a deal for Bradley Barcola, which could eventually make them more willing to let the Dutchman leave.Spurs are also expected to add a central forward, but there has been no concrete development on a particular name yet, with Omar Marmoush and Victor Osimhen among the ones linked.Even if Tottenham manage to complete a signing or two before Saturday, however, they would have no more than two full training sessions with the team. That makes it difficult to see any late arrival starting against Brentford.Do we see the start of De Zerbi-ball?Roberto De Zerbi is widely regarded as one of the best and most attack-minded managers in the game, but we did not see much of that during Tottenham’s relegation battle under him last season.Fair enough, the whole club was in panic mode, and the Italian had very little time to feed his ideas into the players. Somehow, though, Spurs survived, and De Zerbi has already admitted that supporters will see a very different Tottenham side this season. We have already seen signs of that during pre-season, with the players looking far more comfortable on the ball and much more confident when building from the back. We have also seen some beautifully built goals, particularly Richarlison’s opener against Hoffenheim in the first friendly, when Sandro Tonali and Andy Robertson combined brilliantly to set up the Brazilian.More of the same was seen the following day when Mateus Fernandes picked out Ben Davies for a simple header before Pape Sarr picked out 17-year-old Luca Williams Barnett for Spurs’ second in the 2-2 draw.Davies himself has admitted that Tottenham are now much better tactically than they were when De Zerbi first arrived through the door, adding that Spurs are now looking to be patient with the ball and move the opposition around rather than constantly forcing it forward without a plan.READ MORE: Tottenham pre-season minutes reveal early favourites for starting XI vs BrentfordThe post Five things to watch out for during Tottenham’s Premier League opener vs Brentford appeared first on Spurs Web.
