One Brother Tripped on a Stick, and That Was All the Mountain Lion Needed

On March 23, 2024, brothers Taylen and Wyatt Brooks headed into the woods near Georgetown, California, to search for deer antlers. Both were experienced hunters and comfortable in the outdoors, but on this particular trip, they were not carrying firearms. After parking Wyatt’s car, the brothers walked roughly 450 feet up an isolated dirt road. Then Taylen noticed something moving along the steep hillside.“So as I’m looking to my left, I see something out of the corner of my eye come up from the steep side, up onto the road, and at first I just thought it was a dog,” Taylen later recalled. It was not a dog. It was a mountain lion. The brothers immediately recognized the danger and tried to make themselves appear larger. They raised their arms and yelled at the animal, expecting it to become frightened and retreat. Instead, the mountain lion continued walking toward them.“It just looks calm. And it’s just walking towards us slowly,” Wyatt recalled. When the animal refused to back down, Wyatt tried another tactic. He took off his backpack and threw it directly at the mountain lion’s face. The backpack struck the animal, but the reaction was not what the brothers hoped for. The mountain lion simply continued approaching them.Realizing they needed to create more distance, the brothers began moving backward quickly. They knew that running could trigger a chase, so they tried to retreat without turning their backs on the predator. Then Wyatt’s foot caught a stick. He fell, and the mountain lion immediately seized the opportunity. The animal moved around Wyatt’s side and bit him. Wyatt instinctively grabbed the mountain lion, flipped it over and managed to get on top of it, pushing against its neck. For a moment, Wyatt appeared to have the upper hand. But the mountain lion began scratching him, forcing him to let go. The animal escaped and immediately turned its attention toward Taylen.Wyatt watched as the mountain lion charged his brother, rose onto its hind legs and knocked him to the ground. The predator then went straight for Taylen’s neck.Wyatt tried desperately to pull the animal away, but he had already lost a significant amount of blood from his own injuries. He was becoming weaker by the second. Then he noticed something terrifying. Taylen had stopped fighting. His arms were lying motionless at his sides. Wyatt realized he needed help immediately. He ran back toward his car, grabbed his phone and called 911. Blood was dripping onto the screen as he desperately tried to communicate with emergency responders. He then drove around a locked gate, navigating through small trees and rocks to reach the road.By the time he returned, however, both his brother and the mountain lion were gone.Emergency responders eventually arrived and began searching the area. Deputies found blood, a hat and drag marks that led them toward Taylen. They eventually discovered his body, with the mountain lion still nearby. After confirming that Taylen had died, authorities called in a trapper, who killed the animal approximately 300 feet from the attack site.Taylen’s death marked California’s first fatal mountain lion attack since 2004.Wyatt survived the encounter but suffered serious injuries to his face and neck that required reconstructive surgery. The brothers had followed many of the recommended steps for dealing with an approaching mountain lion, including making themselves appear larger, avoiding running and attempting to deter the animal.Unfortunately, none of it was enough.Mountain lion encounters are rare, but if you are hiking in their territory, staying alert is essential. Avoid wearing earbuds that block out surrounding sounds, keep children and pets close, and keep pets on a leash rather than allowing them to wander ahead. If a mountain lion approaches, do not run. Face the animal, make yourself appear as large as possible, make loud noises and slowly back away while giving it a clear path to escape. For Wyatt, the encounter became a fight for survival that he will never forget. For Taylen, one ordinary trip into the woods ended when a mountain lion saw an opportunity and attacked.
