Roderick Azzopardi has pleaded not guilty to the murder of 44-year-old Charlotte Zammit and was remanded in custody following his arraignment in court.The 42-year-old appeared before Magistrate Nadine Sant Lia after being charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Zammit at a residence in Triq Corrado, Żabbar as reported by TVM News.During proceedings, the prosecution revealed that police were alerted after receiving a phone call from an anonymous individual who reported that Azzopardi had sent messages indicating he intended to harm himself.Officers were dispatched to the residence, where they were met by Azzopardi, who prosecutors described as being “highly agitated”.According to the prosecution, Azzopardi immediately wanted to know who had contacted the police. When officers suggested it may have been his former partner, he allegedly replied that it could not have been her because she had come at him and scratched him.The court heard that Azzopardi then informed officers that there was a dead body inside the residence.Police entered the apartment and discovered the body of Charlotte Zammit inside a bedroom. He was immediately placed under arrest on suspicion of wilful homicide.During the sitting, Azzopardi, who told the court he works as a delivery driver, entered a plea of not guilty.His defence team requested a psychological assessment, a request that was upheld by Magistrate Sant Lia after hearing submissions from both parties.Azzopardi was subsequently remanded in custody.The case stems from Saturday’s fatal shooting, which police are investigating as an alleged femicide.
