Dana White wasn’t a fan of Ian Garry’s niceties in the cage. The Irishman lost a competitive fight to UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev on Saturday night in Philadelphia.White believes Garry doesn’t have an ‘ounce of killer instinct’GettyAfter two grappling-heavy opening rounds from Makhachev, Garry began to find success on the feet in the third and fourth stanzas.Heading into the fifth and final frame, the momentum appeared to be swinging in Garry’s favour, but Makhachev rallied late to pick up a unanimous decision.White was a frustrated observer in the last round, with the UFC boss of the belief that Garry let the fight slip away from him due to a ‘lack of killer instinct’. What did Dana White say about Ian Garry’s performance?“This is my honest opinion on it,” White said during his post-fight press conference.“I felt like tonight was set up for the upset, with so much on the line.“I think that Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct in that round [he could’ve won].“He had been beating him to the body. Islam’s whole right side was beat up; his face was beat up.”There were multiple occasions during the bout that Garry stretched out his glove and apologised for landing what he perceived as a blow without the referee issuing a warning. The Irishman also repeatedly embraced Makhachev between rounds, much to the annoyance of White.“You don’t come out and hug and shake hands,” White continued. “That s*** drives me f****** crazy!Garry let the fight slip away from him in the fifthGetty“When there is so much at stake, and there is also a lot of mental gamesmanship. “You come out in that fifth round with a flying knee, or something crazy, and try to finish the fight. “I think this is one of those fights that Ian will go back and watch and say, ‘F***! I wish I could do that over again.’“I think that Ian is a classy guy, he always shows class.“Before the fight, he goes over and shakes all of the corners’ hands.“It’s great, but when that f****** bell rings, you’ve gotta switch all of that s*** off.Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.“And you’ve definitely gotta do it in the fifth round after fighting a great fight against Islam, who everybody in this room is like, ‘Oh, we might start talking about GOAT’.“You don’t go and shake the f****** GOAT’s hand in the fifth round.
