Five Arrested Over Alleged Organised Drug Trafficking Ring In Malta

Five people have been arrested in connection with an alleged organised crime group involved in drug trafficking, following an intensive police investigation.The five, four men and one woman, all Maltese, were arrested on Wednesday during simultaneous searches at four different properties in Għaxaq, Birgu and Żabbar.During a raid in Għaxaq, police arrested three people who were allegedly caught packaging different types of drugs into bags.Officers seized around 140 packets containing a substance suspected to be synthetic cannabis, around 30 packets of suspected cocaine and three other packets of suspected cannabis.A large amount of luxury clothing, electronic items and jewellery, together with around €2,000 in cash, was also seized from the Għaxaq residence.Police also seized four vehicles during the investigation: a BMW 850i, Range Rover Sport, Peugeot van and an Opel.Two other people were arrested after allegedly going to a garage in Żabbar in an attempt to remove the BMW before it could be seized by police.All five are expected to be arraigned in court today at around noon before Magistrate Jean Paul Grech.A magisterial inquiry led by Magistrate Renata Farrugia has also been opened into the case.•
