where I'm from it's illegal to keep horses alone. It should be illegal everywhere for pack animals to be kept alone. I'm not ascribing human emotions to them like loneliness (I don't know enough about them to do so) but I assume they must be in a constant state of stress with no-one of their kind to share watching for predators etc
