Just 58.2% of people in Malta aged 15 and over took at least one personal trip involving an overnight stay in 2024, placing the country below the European Union average.New Eurostat figures show that nearly two-thirds of Europeans travelled for leisure or other personal reasons in 2024, with the EU average standing at 65.4%.Malta ranked 20th among EU member states, behind countries such as Spain, Belgium, Ireland and Germany. The Netherlands topped the ranking, with 83.6% of residents taking at least one trip during the year, followed closely by Luxembourg, Finland and Sweden.At the other end of the table were Romania and Bulgaria, where fewer than one in three residents took a tourism trip in 2024.The figures cover personal travel involving at least one overnight stay, whether domestic or international, and exclude trips taken for work purposes.Across the EU, nearly 249 million people took at least one tourism trip in 2024, an increase of 5.7 million people compared to the previous year.Did you travel abroad or stay in Malta in 2024?•
