Inspector Sean Friggieri told the jury today that investigators established a “close relationship” between former chief of staff Keith Schembri and businessman Yorgen Fenech while probing suspected leaks of sensitive information.Friggieri, who has been stationed at the Financial Crimes Investigation Department for the past decade, explained that investigators examined WhatsApp and Signal messages, as well as ordinary telephone calls, as part of the investigation. He said the relationship between Schembri and Fenech was corroborated by evidence given in court. The inspector also exhibited another document containing chats between Fenech and a contact saved as “K”.The investigation began after Assistant Commissioner Ian Abdilla contacted Friggieri in December 2019 following a criminal complaint filed by the Caruana Galizia family. The complaint concerned information that appeared to have been passed to Fenech during the period following his arrest and while various people were being called to testify.Friggieri said the investigation focused on Schembri, who was suspected of leaking official information. His work between December 2019 and January 2020 involved gathering and analysing data from electronic devices seized during the wider investigation, including phones and laptops belonging to people such as Melvin Theuma.Friggieri also referred to the plastic ice cream box seized from Theuma when he was arrested. Investigators later described it as a “Pandora’s box”, containing phones, USB devices and other material, including evidence relating to secretly recorded conversations with Fenech and the now-infamous photograph of Theuma with Schembri at Castille. The defence objected to references to investigations outside the murder case, arguing these could prejudice Fenech or suggest he had committed other offences. The prosecution argued Friggieri should be allowed to explain the results of his investigation.Judge Edwina Grima ruled that Friggieri could only testify about documents he had exhibited during the inquiry and matters directly connected to the murder case. The Judge then instructed the jury to disregard everything Friggieri had said earlier that morning that fell outside those limits.Friggieri’s testimony follows a week of evidence from murder middleman Melvin Theuma, who repeatedly maintained that Fenech was the only person he knew to have commissioned the assassination, as well as jury site visits over the weekend.•
