Malta is set to strengthen its water supply infrastructure with a new €35 million reverse osmosis plant at Għar Lapsi, capable of producing 30 million litres of drinking water every day.The project, announced by the Water Services Corporation (WSC), will see a new facility known as Plant B built within the existing Għar Lapsi complex, which has been helping convert seawater into drinking water since the early 1980s.Once completed, the plant will add six new reverse osmosis systems with a combined production capacity of 30,000 cubic metres of water per day, boosting Malta’s ability to meet growing demand while reducing pressure on limited groundwater resources.The project forms part of WSC’s wider National Investment Plan, which is expected to see more than €400 million invested in Malta’s water infrastructure over the next decade.Reverse osmosis has become increasingly important for Malta, where below-average rainfall and limited natural freshwater sources have made desalination a key part of the country’s water supply.Construction is expected to take just under three years, with the existing Għar Lapsi plant remaining fully operational throughout the works.According to WSC, the new facility will also incorporate energy-saving technology designed to reduce electricity consumption and improve the efficiency of water production.•
