Lucasfilm is entering a major transition, one that could shape the future of Star Wars for years to come.Credit: LucasfilmAfter months of speculation about her future at the studio, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy addressed the rumors in 2025, insisting she wasn’t stepping away from filmmaking. Speaking to Deadline, Kennedy said, “What’s happening at Lucasfilm is I have been talking for quite some time with both Bob [Iger, former Disney CEO] and Alan [Bergman, Disney Entertainment] about what eventual succession might look like. We have an amazing bench of people here, and we have every intention of making an announcement months or a year down the road.”She made clear she had no plans to retire from filmmaking, joking she would “die” making movies.Despite those comments, Lucasfilm did eventually confirm that Kennedy had stepped down as President. Other projects, including James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” and Dave Filoni’s Mando-Verse crossover, remain in limbo.Following The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s poor box office performance, a result that Chief Executive Officer Josh D’Amaro highlighted on the most recent Disney quarterly earnings call, it seems that Filoni’s movie may be scrapped altogether–especially when paired with his new role as co-lead of Lucasfilm.Meanwhile, Simon Kinberg’s new post-Rise of Skywalker trilogy has emerged as Lucasfilm’s central priority. Kennedy confirmed the project’s momentum back in 2024: “We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously. That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June.” She added, “This is the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future,” confirming the trilogy will move beyond the Skywalker Saga with mostly new characters.Credit: LucasfilmMore recently, in her exit interview with Deadline at the top of the year, Kennedy gave an update on the screenplay’s progress: “He’s working right now. He wrote something that we read in August, and it was very good, but not there. We’ve pretty much upended the story, and then spent a great deal of time on the treatment, which he finished literally about four weeks ago. And it’s a very detailed treatment, like 70 pages. And so he is expected to give us something in [March 2026].”That update has fueled speculation about the fate of Daisy Ridley’s planned “New Jedi Order” film, which went unmentioned in Kennedy’s interview. Reports from Daniel Richtman suggest Ridley’s Rey will still play a major role, just not as the story’s lead, raising the possibility her film is being folded into Kinberg’s trilogy. Disney’s decision to hand Star Wars‘ December 2026 release slot to 20th Century Studios’ Ice Age 6 only added to the uncertainty.While things have remained quiet, Kinberg shared this week that he was at Skywalker Ranch. Posting to social media, Kinberg shared a photo of Lake Ewok, the manmade lake located on the ranch’s property.
