Swimmers are being urged to stay alert after bearded fireworms, known locally as busuf, were recently spotted in Birżebbuġa and other shallow bays around Malta.Despite their colourful appearance, the creatures should not be touched.The marine worms are covered in thousands of tiny hollow bristles containing toxins. When disturbed, they flare out these bristles, which can become lodged in the skin and cause an intense burning sensation, swelling and irritation.Often mistaken for floating tentacles or colourful caterpillars, bearded fireworms are a common sight in the Mediterranean, particularly around shallow rocky areas.If stung, experts advise against rubbing the affected area, as this can push the bristles deeper into the skin. Instead, adhesive tape can be used to help remove embedded bristles before washing the area and seeking medical advice if symptoms worsen.With beach season still in full swing, swimmers are being encouraged to keep an eye out for the unusual creatures while enjoying Malta’s coastline.•
