By Mulengera ReportersA creative surge is sweeping across Uganda as Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo met award-winning filmmaker Lukia Nakabazzi, reflecting on her journey since she earned recognition at the 2024 Uganda Film Festival (UFF).Thembo welcomed Nakabazzi to his office earlier this week, where she shared how the recognition she received at the festival has influenced her career and shaped her journey as an artist.Nakabazzi also presented an artwork to the Commission as a gesture of appreciation for its continued support for local talent.Thembo said the artwork had been formally accepted on behalf of UCC in accordance with the Commission’s protocol on official items and artist representations. It will be catalogued and preserved as part of the Commission’s cultural collection. But beyond celebrating her artistic achievement, the meeting also turned attention to Nakabazzi’s personal ambitions, particularly her desire to complete her university education.Thembo said UCC is actively exploring ways to support her educational aspirations through its network of educational and industry partners. The engagement, however, also brought into focus the wider challenges confronting Uganda’s creative sector, where many talented artists continue to face significant socioeconomic vulnerabilities.Thembo said the experience of creatives such as Nakabazzi demonstrates why support for the industry must go beyond awards and recognition. He said true empowerment requires systemic change, stressing the need for stronger structures to protect artists’ livelihoods, welfare and long-term security.UCC, he said, remains committed to advancing advocacy, policy refinement, capacity building and strategic partnerships aimed at creating a sustainable and resilient creative ecosystem. The meeting comes as Uganda prepares for the 13th Uganda Film Festival, which will take place from August 21 to 28, 2026.Organized by UCC, the festival will run under the theme “Transformation: The Power of Local Stories.” It will feature public film screenings, masterclasses, industry workshops and networking forums, culminating in an awards gala. The festival is expected to provide filmmakers and other creatives with opportunities to showcase their work, sharpen their skills, build industry connections and explore pathways towards sustainable careers. As Uganda’s film and creative industries continue to grow, UCC says its focus is increasingly shifting from simply celebrating talent to building an ecosystem in which artists can thrive.
