The need for adopting a granular, bottom-up approach to planning cannot be overemphasised. The standardised framework notified by the government to compile District Domestic Product estimates generates uniform data across districts, helps study regional disparities and allocate resources based on ground realities and enables more effective monitoring of the district level wealth generation and growth. To fully harness the potential of the new framework, the existing District Planning Committees may be strengthened with technical expertise capable of analysing and interpreting the DDP data in conjunction with other granular, micro-level operational data and identifying growth opportunities.Kosaraju ChandramouliHyderabad5G network slicingApropos ‘Slicing it right’ (August 17), the debate on 5G network slicing should also consider its potential to improve public infrastructure. Smart transport, telemedicine, disaster management and industrial automation require dependable connectivity, which ordinary networks may not always provide. Properly regulated slicing can create dedicated capacity for such critical applications. The priority, however, should remain public interest rather than commercial advantage. TRAI should identify essential services that deserve assured connectivity and require operators to publish clear service standards. Independent monitoring can ensure that ordinary users are not disadvantaged.Prajesh ParamasivanCoimbatoreEnergy securityThis refers to ‘India needs to build a dedicated strategic uranium reserve’ (August 17). India’s expanding nuclear programme requires a reliable and long-term fuel strategy. Dependence on overseas uranium supplies can expose energy planning to geopolitical disruptions and price volatility. A strategic reserve would provide an important buffer, but it should be accompanied by greater domestic exploration, efficient mining and investment in reprocessing technologies. Long-term agreements with reliable suppliers can further strengthen energy security. Nuclear expansion must maintain stringent standards of safety, waste management and environmental protection.SM JeevaChennaiPublished on August 17, 2026Sign into Unlock benefits!Access 10 free stories per monthAccess to comment on every storySign up/Manage to our newslettersGet notified by email for early preview to new features, discounts & offers${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
