Footage of the interrogation of Yorgen Fenech showed him telling police that former OPM Chief Of Staff Keith Schembri allegedly planned on having middleman Melvin Theuma killed. This claim was by Fenech after his arrest in 2019, with footage of the interrogation being shown to the Jury as Inspector Kurt Zahra took to the witness stand. During questioning, Fenech described Theuma as increasingly difficult to deal with, claiming that the middleman was constantly seeking money from him to pass on to the Degiorgio brothers and Vince Muscat (il-Koħħu). Fenech told investigators that Theuma was “all over the place” and was putting him under growing financial pressure. According to Fenech, Theuma would repeatedly approach him for money, which was then passed on to those involved in the murder. He went on to detail how Theuma had adopted a strategy of applying pressure and making threats, raising fears that he could reveal what he knew about the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The accused then claimed that Keith Schembri told him he would send someone to kill Theuma. He recalled being horrified by the suggestion and told Schembri not to go ahead.According to Fenech’s account, Schembri subsequently told him that Kenneth Camilleri had gone to Theuma’s home with the intention of killing him, but abandoned the plan after finding Theuma holding his young son.During Camilleri’s testimony this July, the court directly put the allegation to him after Fenech’s police statement was raised. Asked whether Schembri had sent him to Theuma to kill him, Camilleri denied it.The issue was also raised in earlier proceedings as investigators examined the network of people who became involved around Theuma after the Degiorgio brothers and Muscat were arrested. Police evidence has described Camilleri, Johann Cremona and others as figures who became involved in attempts to calm Theuma as his anxiety increased. The allegations form part of Fenech’s account to police and remain allegations. Schembri has faced separate scrutiny over his alleged links to Theuma, while Camilleri has denied Fenech’s claim that he was sent to kill the middleman.•
