Sonic customers asked for two burgers to be completely remade over missing bacon. Then they refused to hand the originals back: ‘Calling corporate’

Wait 5 sec.

A Sonic employee says a simple order mix-up turned into a call to corporate after a customer refused to give back two burgers that were missing bacon. Jocelynn (@lifewith.joc on TikTok), an 18-year-old college student, shared the story in a video filmed while she was still in her work uniform. She said a couple had pressed the call button at their stall after realizing their burgers did not have bacon on them. Jocelynn said there was nothing else wrong with the order. She offered to fix the mistake in one of two ways, but the situation did not go as expected. The customer offered a choice before asking for the burgers back Jocelynn said she walked out to the car after noticing the couple already had their food. She asked if there was a problem with the order, and the customers told her bacon was missing from both burgers. @lifewith.joc why are people weirdddd. #sonic #work #fyp #storytime #viral ♬ original sound – Jocelynn She explained in her video that the burgers were otherwise correct. “It wasn’t like we added something that wasn’t supposed to be on there. We forgot something. Bacon,” she said. Jocelynn then gave the couple two options. She asked if they wanted her to take the burgers back inside to add the bacon, or if they wanted a side of bacon brought out to the car instead. The customers said they wanted the burgers completely remade. Jocelynn agreed to remake the order, but said she needed the original burgers back first. That is when the conversation became tense. According to Jocelynn, the woman said, “no, we’ll throw them away ourselves.” Jocelynn told the customer she still needed to take the burgers inside to throw them away, since that was part of how the order would be redone. The woman replied that her hand had already been on the food, but Jocelynn said she would dispose of it anyway. The woman then put the burgers back in the bag. Jocelynn said she next asked for the receipt so she could process the remake. Instead of handing it over, the woman began taking pictures of it on her phone. Jocelynn decided to go back inside and reprint the receipt rather than wait, taking the burgers with her. When she returned outside, Jocelynn said the woman was on the phone with Sonic’s corporate line, asking for her name. “Mind you, it would have been so much different if it was a drink or if I actually like completely messed up your burger, but no, you guys just wanted two burgers each,” Jocelynn said in the video. She went on to question why she was reported for following normal procedure. “And, like, what? You’re calling corporate on me for doing my job? My job? My job is to take back things and go remake them,” she said. She added that she had offered simpler solutions before the situation escalated. “I could have brought you out sides of bacon. I could have taken your burger inside and added bacon, but you wanted your whole meal remade.” The comment section filled up with people sharing their own experience with restaurant policy, and several commenters said they work in the food industry themselves.  One commenter, going by the name amber, backed up Jocelynn’s explanation and wrote, “At my Sonic, we’re supposed to take the prior food back if they want it remade. That way we can track our waste and then they’re not getting free stuff.” Disputes over who gets to keep mishandled food have shown up in other cases too, including a driver who fought to get his delivery back after it was dropped at the wrong house. Not every commenter agreed that taking the food back was necessary. A user who said they manage a Sonic location, described a different approach at their store. “As a manger for Sonic for my store were personally are not allowed to take food back, we usually just remake the food/drink and send them on their way it’s less of a hassle to argue with them for the food back,” they wrote. Another commenter said policies can vary by location and sided with giving customers what they ask for to avoid conflict. “I am working in Sonic, but idk also what is Sonic SOP on this kind of issue, different stores, different procedures. But if am the manager, i’ll do what the customer wants, if they want new burger, give them,” they wrote, adding that staff should still log the details for the store’s records. They ended their comment by praising Jocelynn directly: “You did great.” A similar standoff played out when a customer accused a restaurant of canceling her food and confronted staff in person over the mix-up. A commenter named Jaymi appeared unbothered by the threat of a corporate complaint and voiced support for Jocelynn’s handling of the situation, writing, “Cooperate don’t scare me. I laugh when they say they are going to call. I’m still going to have a job tomorrow.”  Other commenters compared the incident to their own experiences as customers. One user wrote, “Every restaurant I’ve been to where they’ve forgotten to add something, they’ve always taken my plate back.” Underneath that comment, another user asked a pointed question about the order itself: “was the bacon on the recipe?” Sonic’s parent company, Inspire Brands, has not publicly responded to the video at the time of writing.
