The 2026/27 Premier League season will see multiple changes to when VAR can intervene.Several new rules introduced for the World Cup have been streamlined for use domestically this term.A host of changes have been introduced for VAR for the new Premier League seasonAFPHowever, there are also some changes from the tournament which will not be implemented by the Premier League.Among the alterations, VAR will have fresh guidelines to follow for yellow cards in the top-flight.Fans could see the changes in use for the first time this weekend.The new campaign begins on Friday night as Arsenal host Coventry City at 8pm, live on talkSPORT.New VAR rules for yellow cardsFrom this season, VAR will now be able to look at second yellow cards shown to players.When a player is sent off for their second bookable offence, the incident can be reviewed by the video officials.However, they will not be able to review potential second yellow cards.Instead, VAR can only intervene to determine whether there was a clear error in awarding the foul.Subjective judgements regarding the colour card shown or if one should have been shown at all will not fall under VAR’s jurisdiction.In the past, the video assistant referees could only step in for straight red cards, either to advise the referee to send a player off or overturn an on-field red card decision.VAR will be permitted to intervene for second yellow cards in the Premier League this seasonGettyVAR was not permitted to intervene when a player was sent off for two yellow cards, though.Premier League VAR changesThe second yellow card reviews are not the only VAR changes coming to the Premier League this weekend.A trial has been approved for reviews on attacking fouls before the ball is in play.In practice, VAR can step in if there is deemed to be a foul by the attacking side before a set-piece is taken if it directly leads to a goal, penalty or potential red card.If given, the game would restart with the set-piece in question being retaken as free-kicks cannot be awarded before the ball is in play.As a result, VAR will not review defensive fouls before set-pieces are taken as penalties are also not able to be awarded.Second yellow cards can now be overturned by VAR if a foul was incorrectly awardedGettySimilarly to the World Cup, VAR will also be used for reviewing potential instances of mistaken identity.There will be changes to the law’s implementation from this summer’s tournament, though.VAR will not be used to penalise simulation under mistaken identity after IFAB pinpointed it was an incorrect application of the law change.The reviews should only occur when the referee has penalised the wrong team.For example, if a handball is given against the home team when it was the away side who committed the offence.What will VAR not intervene in?There remains two areas where VAR will not be able to intervene despite being able to do so during the World Cup.VAR can rule out goals at set-pieces if a foul was committed before the ball was in playAFPVAR will not overturn incorrectly awarded corners in the Premier League this season.Reviews will also not be used to issue a red card to a player for covering their mouth during confrontational situations.Both instances permitted VAR interventions in North America earlier this summer.
