If you’ve ever wanted to experience Malta’s rich history in a completely different light, this is your chance.Museums by Candlelight is returning to Rabat and Mdina on Saturday, 19th September, inviting visitors to explore some of the island’s most fascinating historical sites after dark. For one evening only, three Heritage Malta attractions will be transformed by the glow of thousands of candles, creating a unique atmosphere that combines history, culture and live entertainment.Running from 7pm until midnight, the event gives visitors access to the Domvs Romana, St Paul’s Catacombs and the National Museum of Natural History for just €3.At the Domvs Romana, visitors can step back into Roman Malta and discover how an aristocratic family once lived on the island. The site is renowned for its remarkably preserved mosaics and archaeological treasures, housed within Malta’s first purpose-built archaeological museum, which opened in 1882. Throughout the evening, harpist Laetitia and violinist Stephen Scerri will provide live musical performances from 8pm until 11pm.Those heading underground to St Paul’s Catacombs will have the opportunity to explore Malta’s largest interconnected complex of Roman cemeteries. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into burial customs and religious traditions dating back to the Punic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Earlier this year, the catacombs became the first site in Malta to receive the prestigious European Heritage Label, further cementing their historical significance. Local band Skald will provide live entertainment at the site throughout the evening.Meanwhile, the National Museum of Natural History, located within Mdina’s stunning Vilhena Palace, will be opening its doors after dark to showcase some of its most intriguing exhibits. Visitors can encounter everything from a mummified Nile crocodile and a false killer whale skeleton to a fossilised crocodilian head discovered in Gozo and a tooth from the extinct giant white shark. Violinist Kathy will provide musical accompaniment throughout the night.Adding to the atmosphere, the event coincides with Rabat Sacrum, organised by the Rabat Local Council from 6pm onwards, meaning the streets of Rabat and Mdina will be buzzing with activity throughout the evening.Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, as exploring the three sites involves walking between venues and navigating the historic streets of Malta’s old capital.Tickets are available through Heritage Malta’s online store and will also be available at the door, although organisers are recommending purchasing them in advance.Heritage Malta members enter free of charge, but pre-booking is required.Ticket bookings can be purchased through their website.For anyone looking for a different kind of night out, this candlelit journey through some of Malta’s most remarkable historical sites promises to be one of the most atmospheric cultural events of the year.Tag a friend who would like to know•
