I listed an older sewing machine for free because it still worked and I no longer used it. A woman asked whether it came with the foot pedal and manual. It did, so I said she could collect it on Saturday. Then the requests started. Could I thread it before she arrived? Could I include spare needles, fabric, and scissors? Since she was a beginner, could I also spend an hour showing her how to make curtains? Finally, she asked me to deliver it because driving across town would be “a lot for something untested.” I replied that the machine was free, working, and collection only. I could demonstate that it switched on, but I wasn't supplying an entire sewing kit or a lesson. She said giving away equipment without helping the recipent use it was “wasteful” and asked why I had posted it if I did not want to support beginners.
