Malta’s construction sector showed no signs of slowing down during the second quarter of 2026, with more than 3,100 new homes approved across the islands in just three months.New figures show that 539 building permits were approved between April and June, covering a total of 3,126 new dwellings.That represents a 3.3% increase compared to the same period last year, continuing the upward trend in residential development across Malta and Gozo.The majority of approved homes were apartments, which accounted for 72.1% of all new dwellings given the green light during the quarter.Malta registered the strongest growth, with the number of approved dwellings increasing by 4.6% when compared to the second quarter of 2025.Meanwhile, Gozo and Comino recorded a slight decline, with approved dwellings falling by 5.1%.St Paul’s Bay once again topped the list of localities with the highest number of approved new homes, registering 258 dwellings during the quarter.The figures offer the latest snapshot of Malta’s ongoing development activity, with thousands of new residential units continuing to enter the pipeline despite growing discussions around overdevelopment, infrastructure pressures and housing demand.What do you make of these statistics?•
