“Love is love,” proclaim a TikTok couple, who have gone viral due to their unusual pairing but ask people to keep an open mind about their relationship and the many shapes a marriage can take. Samantha Wynn Greenstone is straight. Her husband Jacob Hoff is gay. They’re in a monogamous marriage. A question has been dogging their union since it went viral, and it basically goes: if a gay man marries a woman, isn’t he really bisexual? Their answer hasn’t budged. She is my person, my soulmate in this life… I’m still gay as day, honey.” The couple also tried to shut down another complaint — that calling Hoff gay erases bisexual people. It doesn’t, they said. “You can exist as a bisexual, and you can also exist as a gay man whose love transcends, because love is love.” Some comments seemed to follow the logic, while others were still a tad confused. “So basically, homosexual and Samantharomantic,” one user helpfully wrote. “So, you don’t have sex? Does he get to cheat? Is the relationship open?” “Having a kid with a gay dad has gotta be like winning the lottery,” another comment read. “I’m more confused than I was before this video started,” one user said. Some users asked if this is just a “lavender marriage,” but the couple reject that term. Greenstone had another message for the skeptics Hoff’s wife had a message for the doubters in the comments section. “Jacob knows his lived experience more than you all know his lived experience, and he’s picking the label that best reflects the experience,” she said. “You don’t get to come on here and force people to identify how you want them to identify.” The talking points are familiar territory for the pair, who have rejected the idea that theirs is a “lavender marriage” (via Business Insider) — a phrase historically attached to unions meant to keep one partner’s sexuality hidden.
