China reportedly launches nuclear-capable long-range missile in the South Pacific

Wait 5 sec.

The report says that the Chinese navy has launched a missile towards an area in the international waters of the South Pacific. Adding that they have conducted the test launch of said strategic missile by submarine.Earlier in the day, media reports from Australia and New Zealand said that the respective governments were informed of China's intention to fire a nuclear-capable long-range missile with a dummy warhead in the South Pacific. The diplomatic sources from those reports said that Chinese officials had briefed various regional governments about an upcoming intercontinental ballistic missile test. Now, Japan has also confirmed the news in saying that they have received notice from China of the missile launch. Australia's foreign ministry also confirms the news in saying that China has notified of a missile test that will occur within the next 24 hours. But according to Chinese media as noted above, it seems that the launch has taken place.Adding to that, Japan's government says that it has strongly urged China to reconsider such plans and expressed grave concern over Beijing's increased military activity. No doubt that this will fall on deaf ears considering recent Japan-China relations. Pfft.In any case, this here is definitely an interesting geopolitical development. For some context, China had only previously test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean in September 2024. And at the time, it was the first such test since 1980.Is this all a signal of intent and/or political posturing? Or just a timely reminder of China's aggression and presence in the geopolitical sphere?Interestingly enough, the missile launch here comes just hours after Australia and Fiji struck a new defence alliance.
