Veteran music producer Paddy Man has revealed that Iryn Namubiru’s hit song “Begombeko” was originally written and produced for socialite and businesswoman Zari Hassan before it eventually found its way to Iryn.Speaking on the Shalom 256 Podcast, Paddy Man explained that songwriter Nince Henry penned the song with Zari in mind during the period when she was briefly pursuing a music career. He had already produced several songs for Zari and hoped “Begombeko” would be another addition to her catalog, but things did not go as planned in the studio.Since now many years have gone by, I can talk about it. Begombeko was written for Zari initially. I had done some songs for her and when I tried to make her sing it, things didn’t click because I’m a purist, except now I understand music in a broader way.The producer explained that while some people record music for personal fulfillment or as a form of therapy, his focus has always been on creating the best possible record. Zari Hassan speaks out on safety amid xenophobic tensions in South AfricaAfter listening to the final composition, he felt the song required a stronger vocalist than Zari could offer.I told Nince Henry the song was good and it needed a better voice because Zari is good at many things, but she isn’t a singer. She couldn’t do what Iryn did. I listened to the song and it was big for Zari, so I suggested Iryn, and she did justice to it.The post Iryn Namubiru’s hit “Begombeko” was initially meant for Zari Hassan appeared first on MBU.
