‘Save Physical Games’ petition hoping to revert PlayStation’s discless future flies past 135,000 signatures

Wait 5 sec.

Sony’s deafening silence since its announcement last week that it would be ditching physical, disc-based PlayStation games in 2028 has been replaced by the voices of the people. A Change.org petition directed at Sony and PlayStation has reached over 135,000 signatures in just a few days, as gamers are showing up in droves trying to get the company to reconsider its decision to leave discs behind. Image via PlayStation “A disc is a real game you own,” the petition, started by Jade Pearce of Winnipeg, Canada, reads. “You can lend it, trade it, resell it, gift it, collect it, or pass it down to your kids. A box with only a download code is not the same thing. It is a digital license in plastic packaging. You do not own it. You are renting access that can be revoked, and people have already had purchased movies deleted from their libraries and games pulled from sale weeks after launch.” In a new update posted today, Pearce said they’re looking to keep up the momentum towards 250,000 signatures and beyond. “Remember what this is about,” Pearce said. “In 2013, Sony told players they could ‘keep their games forever.’ Now they’re taking that away. Vinyl, Blu-ray, and books all still let you own something real. Games shouldn’t be the exception.” Sony’s announcement on July 1 has been followed by complete radio silence, with nary a social media post since. The announcement on X/Twitter has utterly exploded with over 150 million views and 93,000 replies. “We are not against digital,” Pearce said. “We are against digital being the only option. A large and passionate community still wants a real, physical game they own outright, and Sony is about to take that choice away.” And you know what? Hell yeah. I’m a digital player myself, and I haven’t bought a physical game in years. That changes nothing on my stance. Taking away the option for physical games entirely is anti-consumer and reeks of greed. I don’t know if this petition can make a change in a business model that’s likely already in motion, but gamers everywhere are not going out quietly about it.0The post ‘Save Physical Games’ petition hoping to revert PlayStation’s discless future flies past 135,000 signatures appeared first on Destructoid.
