The Belgian Men’s National Team are furious with FIFA following Sunday’s ruling to overturn Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban. Balogun was originally slated to miss Monday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 tie against the Belgians after receiving a red card in the U.S. Men’s National Team’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina last Wednesday. However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee overturned Balogun’s one-match ban, stating that should the American forward pick up another red card in the competition, he would then have to serve a suspension for his actions. The Belgian FA issued a statement on Sunday afternoon voicing their frustration with FIFA while national team head coach Rudi Garcia followed suit in his prematch press conference. “I didn’t know that at the World Cup, the 5th of July is actually the first of April, it’s April Fools’ [Day],” Garcia said Sunday. “We’re not defending the national team or federation,” Garcia said. “We are defending football.”FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play came less than 36 hours until the Round of 16 tie in Seattle, a second showdown between the USMNT and Belgium this year. Belgium could still file a grievance against FIFA for its actions however it is to change the outcome of Monday’s match, especially with such short time until kickoff. Red Devils goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois admitted that even with the dangerous Balogun on the field, Belgium will need to be ready for all 11 USMNT starters, not only him. “Had it been done earlier, we’d have been able to be mentally more prepared perhaps,” Courtois said. “It’s good that we have another training, but we’ll be ready. We’ll be on the pitch. They have 11 players, not only Balogun.“He is a very fast striker,” Courtois added. “Maybe a different profile than [Ricardo] Pepi. They have a lot of quality up front.”The USMNT will be pleased to have Balogun available, given the fact he’s scored three goals at the World Cup and had a hand in one own goal as well.
