History has not been on the U.S. Men’s National Team’s side in previous meetings with Belgium, but they aren’t too concerned with that heading into Monday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 showdown. Seattle Stadium will play host to the second USMNT-Belgium matchup this year as the two squads seek a spot in the quarterfinal round. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are riding high after a 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina while Belgium erased a two-goal deficit to defeat Senegal 3-2 in dramatic fashion to advance themselves. With the United States just recently celebrating its 250th birthday, confidence is high in the group, knowing Monday’s match provides a great opportunity to continue what has been an impactful summer. “As a team, we want to leave our mark on the game and a legacy behind,” USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams told reporters. “I want it to be more than just what this moment has created and the hype around it.“Taking this thing as far as we can is the most important thing,” Adams added. “We have a good opportunity here to do so.”Several of the current USMNT players were part of the program’s run to the Round of 16 in Qatar four years ago. Adams, captain Tim Ream, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, and Antonee Robinson are just a handful of players who have those experiences under their belt, a valuable thing to have heading into a win-or-go-home match. While many other players such as Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi, and Chris Richards were not part of the last go around in Qatar, they have been part of big-time moments at club level, giving them a taste of what Monday’s match could feel like. “You need to embrace the moment, that’s for sure, to have an opportunity to play in around a 16 game, which obviously in the last World Cup we did,” Adams said. “It’s exciting. It was nice to get a little bit of a taste of what it feels like to play with something a little bit more on the line in the last game. I think that’s good preparation.”The USMNT have not defeated Belgium in a match since the first-ever showdown between the two countries, a 3-0 group stage victory for the Americans at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. Belgium has won each of the last five head-to-head matchups in all competitions, most famously eliminating the USMNT 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Most recently, Rudi Garcia’s men routed the Americans 5-2 in Atlanta last March, overcoming a first-half Weston McKennie goal to breeze by Pochettino’s men in friendly action. Plenty has changed for both teams though since their last encounter over three months ago and the USMNT are only focusing on the present ahead of the next chapter in the series. “It doesn’t matter,” USMNT defender and captain Tim Ream said of the last meeting with Belgium back on March 28. “This is a completely different game than in March.”
