Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium is celebrating its 25th anniversary in style by ringing in a host of upgrades and renovations. Not all NFL fields are made equal and earlier this year the annual NFLPA report cards graded the turf inside Acrisure Stadium an F-, the worst in the league.Acrisure Stadium’s previous turf was labeled the worst in the entire NFLGettyTeam owner Art Rooney II acknowledged the need for an upgrade back in February, revealing that the new grass will be Tahoma 31 Bermuda, a mix of Bermuda and bluegrass, which the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears currently use, which marks a departure from the previously used Kentucky bluegrass.“It sounds crazy, but they grow the grass on a plastic sheet first to make sure the roots are growing,” Rooney said at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. “It’s a different blend of what we have been using. They’ve been using it in other places and it’s been working.”According to Sports Illustrated’s Jack Markowski, the new playing surface has now been installed.Aaron Rodgers and other Steelers have called out Acrisure Stadium turfFor Rooney II and the Steelers, the upgrade will hopefully mark the end of player injuries, controversies, and concerns as it pertains to the turf.Wear and tear is commonplace on NFL fields, but Acrisure Stadium, ranked as the NFL’s 10th most haunted arena, suffers more than most because both the Steelers and college football’s Pitt Panthers play there, sometimes on the same weekend. In October, the field at Acrisure Stadium came under fire from both teams after the Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns on an ‘unplayable’ surface.Steelers kicker Chris Boswell slipped and fell attempting to kick a field goal during the 23-9 win, with Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers slamming the Acrisure Stadium turf.“The field got borderline unplayable, “Rodgers said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I just felt like it got real beat up.“By the time the third quarter rolled around, that thing was really beat up. It reminds me a little bit of the field in Green Bay in the early years, but not until, like, November or early December where it would get kind of torn up a little bit.“Then they went out and found an incredible field maintenance guy that came over and helped our guys out, and the field in Green Bay is absolutely immaculate, but the field today got pretty torn up.”Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been one of the most vocal critics of the unplayable surfaceGettyRooney II acknowledged the need for changeGettyThe new grass, Tahoma 31 Bermuda, a mix of Bermuda and bluegrass, has now been installedGettySteelers offensive lineman Broderick Jones said they “kicked up chunks of grass” during the game, which also saw special teams standout Miles Killebrew suffer a serious non-contact knee injury.“Honestly, it was s***,” Pittsburgh star and NFLPA vice president Cameron Heyward said. “I lost one of my teammates and that makes me sad about it. … I like grass, but that wasn’t grass we played on.”The Steelers have played their home contests at Acrisure Stadium every year since its inaugural season in 2001, back when it was called Heinz Field. It also played host to the 2026 NFL Draft, where some 805,000 people made their way down to the arena, as well as Point State Park — home of MLB‘s Pittsburgh Pirates — to watch teams pick their stars of the future over the annual three-day event. The record-breaking turnout was a kindly reminder of Pittsburgh’s power as a sports mecca, and why Steelers fans are more than deserving of an NFL stadium befitting of that status. However, unlike the Chiefs, Bears, Titans, Jaguars, and Browns, who are all at various stages of building new stadiums, both PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium — whose leases run out in 2030 and 2031, respectively — are going down the renovation route, something Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor has acknowledged the need for.The Pirates are also in the process of renovating PNC ParkGettyRenovation work is already under way at Acrisure, but more is needed in futureGettyThey are both in need of some upgrades,” O’Connor said.“We understand that.”Acrisure Stadium has undergone several changes in recent monthsAcrisure Stadium’s playing surface is just one of the many changes Rooney II has overseen over the past few months. The 68,400-strong arena is known for its “sea of gold” seating that many believe is a bit of an eyesore, especially for those watching on TV.The Steelers owner has therefore decided that there will now be black seats dotted in and around the gold seats on the upper deck, with the purpose of mitigating the impact of empty seats around the stadium.NFL Stadium StatusOn the Move – Why is Roger Goodell allowing three of NFL’s most famous teams to build $8.8bn new homes and ditch diehard fans?Chicago Bears – NFL’s second-oldest team admits defeat as $5bn relocation from 102-year-old stadium confirmed in statementKansas City Chiefs – Chiefs owner issues response as Kansas City’s $4bn cross-state relocation plan hits roadblockJacksonville Jaguars – $5.6bn NFL team’s 150-mile relocation triggers unique rule exemption amid CBA conflictCleveland Browns – $2.6bn NFL stadium fraught with drama finally makes breakthrough as Super Bowl dream teasedTennessee Titans – Super Bowl 2030 host is unopened $2.2bn ‘cookie-cutter’ stadium that will be NFL’s smallest“The sea of gold sometimes gets overwhelming, so we did a little black and gold in there this time around,” he said.According to Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Sports & Exhibition Authority board announced back in October that it was set to replace 22,000 seats at Acrisure due to significant deterioration. The estimated cost of was approximately $6 million. It is expected that by 2029, more than 58,000 outdoor seats will replaced. As a result of the recent changes, the Steelers gave fans a chance to buy a piece of history by auctioning off the seats.Per WPXI, roughly 22,000 seats from the Upper Level East, Upper Level West, and North Club sections were on the market back in MayA seat was going for $399, or a pair could be purchased for $599.A budget-friendly option of buying just the back for $199 or bottom at $149 was also being offered at the time.Stay up to date with the NFL across all our talkSPORT platforms – subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest news, opinion, exclusive interviews and our  daily unfiltered, unscripted show ‘The S* Word, from 8am ET
