Tottenham have confirmed the club-record signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, in a deal that could reportedly reach £100m.Tonali will form part of a new-look, £185m midfield duo, after they brought in Mateus Fernandes from relegated rivals West Ham.Spurs have also acquired Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £50m, with Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka also arriving as free agents, in a busy start to the transfer window.Roberto De Zerbi's team only avoided dropping to the Championship by two points last season, with a 1-0 win over Everton on the final day ensuring they avoided a humiliating relegation. But they intend to compete at the opposite end of the table next term, and Tonali is determined to play his part after penning what is reportedly a six-year contract. The Italy international said: "I'm very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. "People said about there being four or five clubs [competing to sign me]… but there was only one."I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. "I've played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can't wait to start the season."Having joined Newcastle from Serie A giants AC Milan in 2023, Tonali made 110 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists. During his time at St. James' Park, the 26-year-old helped Newcastle end their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by beating Liverpool 2-1 in the EFL Cup final in 2024-25. De Zerbi expects his compatriot to immediately become a key part of the team, saying: "Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club."I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I'm so happy to be working with him now. "Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team."Tonali made 35 Premier League appearances for Newcastle last season, starting 31 times, though he did not score and only registered two assists.Only Bruno Guimaraes (45) created more chances for Eddie Howe's side than Tonali (32), whose 1,319 successful passes were only bettered by centre-back Malick Thiaw (1,519).The post Tottenham sign Tonali for club-record £100m fee appeared first on SoccerNews.
