‘Never sits easy with me’ – Alan Shearer questions why Tottenham can outspend Newcastle

Wait 5 sec.

Alan Shearer has made an interesting claim about the power Roberto De Zerbi has at Tottenham as the Lilywhites continue to splash the cash this summer. The signing of Sandro Tonali has taken Tottenham’s net spend this summer to a whopping £237m, the most they have ever spent in a single transfer window.Interestingly, reports indicate that Spurs are expected to continue their summer spending spree, with further big-money additions on the cards.Tottenham are now working on strengthening their attack ahead of the new season, with the Lilywhites thought to be keen on adding a left-winger and a striker to their squad.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramAlan Shearer claims Roberto De Zerbi has spending guarantees in Tottenham’s contractAlan Shearer expressed frustration that the financial rules do not allow his beloved Newcastle to spend like Tottenham are doing this summer. The Premier League’s highest-ever goalscorer also believes that guarantees on Spurs’ summer spending would have been added to De Zerbi’s contract when the Lilywhites persuaded him to take the job just over three months ago.Shearer told Betfair (via Football.London): “This is my argument in terms of the rules in football now on clubs spending. You’ve got a team who finished 17th twice in a row, yet they can go and blow everyone out of the water in terms of money-wise, where Newcastle can’t. Newcastle have had to sell their best young players, had to sell their best players to comply with the rules.“So, it never, ever sits easy with me. But that’s Tottenham, that’s fine, they can do that. I guess De Zerbi got that in his contract, if we stay up, this is what we have to do, otherwise, I’m not coming. So, he’s in a real power situation. The power is always with De Zerbi in terms of what he wants and what he can do. So, yeah, I’m fine with Spurs spending the money. It’s just frustrating that Newcastle, with the wealth, can’t spend like that.”Spurs have proven they are a ‘big six’ clubOver the last year or so, we have constantly had Newcastle and Aston Villa fans claim that Tottenham are no longer a ‘big six’ club, and that they had overtaken the Lilywhites.Just last month, Gabby Agbonlahor mocked Spurs by describing them as a ‘top 17 side’, and insisted that Sandro Tonali would never want to go to N17.It is fair to say that Spurs have shown so far this summer just why they are a ‘big six’ club, and the likes of Villa and Newcastle are not. While Villa and Newcastle have had decent success over the last few years, Tottenham have done this for the best part of 20 years and built up the club both on and off the pitch, and they are now reaping those rewards.READ MORE: ‘Blood and energy’ – Mateus Fernandes reveals what De Zerbi told him about joining TottenhamThe post ‘Never sits easy with me’ – Alan Shearer questions why Tottenham can outspend Newcastle appeared first on Spurs Web.
