He eventually moved to London with a band around 2005 or 2006.“I moved there with my band, ended up doing these club nights called Young Turks,” he said. “They went very well, and the reason I got into club nights was because the promoters in London were very difficult—it was very pay-to-play mentality. He told Interview that the beginning of Attawalpa also coincided with a major personal shift for him: getting sober.“It took me a while to find that name, but I landed on it because my sobriety coincides with Attawalpa’s birthday,” he said.Under the moniker, Felber released two EPs before his debut album, Presence, arrived in 2022. His second album, Experience, followed in 2025.He started making his own music after years of playing for other people.Before Attawalpa, Felber spent years working behind the scenes and as part of other acts.“I was writing for other people, being in bands of other people, playing guitar for other people,” he told Interview. After stepping away from drugs and alcohol in 2018, he said, he began taking his own songs more seriously.Felber has been candid about how substance use affected his earlier years in music. Speaking to Interview about his 20s, he said, “I was in a lot of bands, made a lot of music. My only regret is that I didn’t put out half of that music, because when you’re smoking weed every day, you think it’s giving you an energy of release or creativity, but really, it’s very hard to make decisions.”In 2021, he told The New York Times that becoming more aware of his habits ultimately helped his work. “For me, the most punk rock thing is to be conscious,” he said. “Since I’ve been conscious, I’ve managed to put out loads of music and be more open to who I am.”Felber and Dunham met on a blind date in 2021.Mutual friends set up Dunham and Felber shortly after she relocated to London.
