Chris Smalling is close to a shock free transfer to Porto, according to reports.Fabrizio Romano reports that the former Manchester United defender has agreed a deal to join the Portuguese giants.Smalling has already played for several massive European clubsGettyThe 36-year-old is now set to have a medical before penning a contract with Porto, who are in the Champions League this season.Smalling is a free agent after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al Fayha in July.He was unable to find a club during the transfer window, but Porto have elected to bring him in as cover and to compete with the club’s current centre-backs.They include former Arsenal man Jakub Kiwior and ex-Southampton star Jan Bednarek.Smalling will be signing a one-year deal with the option for an extra one as he returns to Europe after two years in Saudi Arabia.It marks another step in a career that has taken Smalling all over.Smalling gets his moveThe centre-back joined talkSPORT Breakfast in August to discuss his future.He made it clear that he wasn’t going to just accept any offer and wanted a project that excited him, and Porto is clearly that.He said: “At the minute, there’s conversations ongoing.“I’ve had some offers, so I feel like I’m in a good position.“But at my stage in my career, it’s now about being patient, making sure it’s the right kind of project that fits everything in terms of my role in the team and what I can bring on and off the pitch.“I’m in a nice position and just kind of seeing where that lies over the next couple of weeks.”Smalling has won nine major trophies across his careerGetty - ContributorSmalling’s careerSmalling started his career with Millwall before moving onto non league Maidstone United.From there, he progressed through the academy and got a move to Fulham, where he exploded.It took just 13 Premier League appearances across two seasons for Manchester United to agree a pre-contract agreement with the defender.That saw him join the Red Devils in the summer of 2010, and he remained until 2019.During his time at Old Trafford, Smalling won two Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson.And he became an important part of the team from 2013 onwards, helping Man United win the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League in his time at Old Trafford.On the international stage, Smalling played every minute of Euro 2016 as England were knocked out by Iceland. He managed 31 caps for the Three Lions.A transfer to Roma rejuvenated his career and saw him help the club win their first European title.That was under Jose Mourinho, and it was the Conference League as Smalling played ten games and scored a goal on the way to Roma lifting the title.Now, he’ll be hoping to add another major league title to his name as well with Porto flying at the top of of the Primeira League, with seven wins from seven.
