Connections of the first two horses home in Saturday's Goffs Million will reinvest some of their big-race riches in this week's Orby Sale, according to trainer Paddy Twomey, who was the mastermind behind one of the buying and training performances of the season with Trean and Hi Corbett Court. Both horses were sourced by the trainer for a combined sum of €105,000 at the Orby Sale last year, with the winner costing just €20,000. To put Saturday's achievements into context, the Twomey-trained colts took home a cool €700,000 of the €1 million in prize-money on offer for the race, leading Goffs chief Henry Beeby to label such scenes that played out in the Curragh winners' enclosure on Saturday as the perfect advertisement for the Orby Sale. Beeby said, “We're in the business of selling the dream and, a €20,000 horse from Orby Book 1 winning the Goffs Million, not to mention a €50,000 bonus when they won their maiden, is a dream result. The joy they all experienced was just fantastic to witness. Paddy Twomey has done exceptionally well out of this sale. He won the Million with One Look a few seasons ago and he is just a very shrewd operator.”Beeby will be telling us the sky is blue next. The secret has long been out that Twomey is a bit special. “A different beast,” is how Brian Riordan, who heads up the Red Lily Racing Syndicate that owns Trean described the handler the morning after the day that was. “It's a fairytale, to be honest,” Riordan said, still high on excitement from the whole experience. “It just goes to show the power of racing and the power of a horse, really. You could say Trean has become a bit of a people's horse because we have syndicate members from all over the country and they all backed him yesterday. We're good at beating ourselves up over various things in this game, including prize-money, but at the end of the day, this sport is man and beast and it can be done. Trean probably showed a few people out there that they can have success without spending a huge amount of money. We have 27 people involved in the syndicate and 20 of those were never involved in a horse before. That bit is key. They've all had an unbelievable experience with a horse who cost only €20,000 and has now won well over €600,000, so it really is unbelievable.”Paddy Twomey: “You have to be brave – you have to speculate. If you want to train winners, you're going to have to go up and buy the horses first before you worry about getting owners afterwards.”The syndicate manager added, “On top of everything else, he is a proper horse to look forward to next year, that is if he is still with us as he is worth a lot of money and we will have to consider everything going forward. I have been knocking around with Paddy for 20 years now. He's just a different beast. That's the easiest way to put it. We will try to reinvest with Paddy this week but we won't go mad, either. We have a €10,000 IRE incentive from when Trean won his maiden at Galway so we can use that against the purchase as well, so hopefully we can get something.”Twomey: “I'm sure people can find plenty of other things to spend their money on than yearlings but, when you put this carrot in front of them, it's a huge incentive.” | GoffsOf course, the good news stories, certainly from a Goffs perspective, didn't just start and finish with the Million. Premier Yearling Sale graduate Sun Goddess (Sioux Nation) confirmed herself one of the most special juvenile fillies in modern times with a scintillating performance in the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes. A half an hour later, Orthodox (Havana Grey) led home Force Noir (Persian Force) in the G1 Middle Park Stakes. Again, both horses could have been bought at Kildare Paddocks 12 months previously for €175,000 and €130,000 respectively. When you add all of that to the fact Johanna Walsh (Sea The Stars) had already flown the flag for the sale in the Irish Oaks, it is no wonder that footfall at Goffs this weekend has been strong. Buyers are voting with their feet.Beeby said, “If Carlsberg did weekends? Sun Goddess winning the Cheveley Park was great for the Premier Yearling connection and then to have a one-two in the Middle Park Stakes with Orthodox and Force Noir for the Orby Sale was just fantastic. Just what you want. And then the result of the Million, that was just fantastic. The celebrations from the syndicate members of the winner Trean, along with the second, Hi Corbett Court, was just amazing. Superb. And a great advert for Goffs. We've had Royal Ascot winners, Classic winners and then yesterday's results to top it all off.”He added, “What I like is that, since the catalogue came out, the number of people who said to me in Deauville, York, Doncaster or wherever I may have been, that we assembled a hell of a catalogue has been vast. They usually followed up with the question, 'do the physicals match up?' I have looked at a great number of the horses on offer and I feel that we have got great support – consignors have really rowed in behind us. All we have ever asked of Irish breeders is to send us a share of their best, and I think we have that.”Perhaps fitting to leave the last word to Twomey. Along with Trean and Hi Corbett Court, last year's Orby haul for the trainer featured the Breeders' Cup-bound Velozee and the Weld Park Stakes runner-up Alpine Wedding among others. So, what should be on our shopping list this year?“You just have to turn up at the sale and go through the horses, see what you find and get lucky with what you buy,” Twomey replies. “Trean was an inexpensive horse bought in Book 1 and Bayside Boy has obviously clicked. He's a lucky horse, but he's also a sound horse and a good horse, which is important. Trean and Hi Corbett Court are owned by syndicates and they got a huge amount of enjoyment out of Saturday. In actual fact, Hi Corbett Court is owned by the Corbett family, who had a horse finish out the back in the race last year. After that, they said, 'will we try and go better next year?' They set out to buy a horse at this sale last year to have another go at the race and picked up €200,000 in prize-money on Saturday. What's brilliant is that the connections of both horses are probably going to reinvest again.”Twomey added, “The Goffs Million is a great pot and a massive incentive. So, too, are the €50,000 bonuses that are attached to certain maidens, and we have been lucky enough to have won some of those this season as well. When you're asking people to spend money on yearlings, it's a great incentive. There's a €2 million fund there, and you can chisel away into it and get as much of it as you can. It's a good carrot. I'm sure people can find plenty of other things to spend their money on than yearlings but, when you put this carrot in front of them, it's a huge incentive. This sale has been lucky for us and being a trainer, you have to be brave – you have to speculate. If you want to train winners, you're going to have to go up and buy the horses first before you worry about getting owners afterwards.
