Law & Order: App launched to strengthen village patrolling and surveillance in Kanniyakumari - The HinduPublished - October 01, 2026 08:25 pm IST - NAGERCOIL:NAGERCOIL:Kanniyakumari district police have recently launched a mobile application as part of its Oorkaval Kankanippu Thittam (rural policing and surveillance) initiative to ensure regular patrolling by police personnel assigned to specific villages.As part of the initiative, two surveillance cameras have been installed at the entry point or major locations in each village. A police personnel from the local station will be in-charge of the village. Police officers have been directed to visit their assigned villages at least thrice a week to review the situation and to receive petitions from the villagers.Sub Inspectors of the specific jurisdiction will conduct weekly inspection, Inspectors once in every two weeks and Sub Divisional Officers will make monthly visits to ensure accountability.The initiative has been well-received by the public and, in several cases, it has helped trace suspects involved in crime. Over 700 constables have been assigned as in-charge officers of villages across the district.According to a police official, the constables have been directed to visit their village four times a week and upload photographs from the locations through the application. The photographs, tagged with auto-enabled time, location and other relevant details, will facilitate senior officials to monitor their visits.The initiative has been implemented across the district, with police personnel assigned to every village including Pechiparai and other high-altitude areas. The police personnel have been trained in the use of the application and other aspects of the initiative.The initiative was initially launched with installation of two CCTV cameras in each village. However, the number of cameras is being increased in some villages through contribution from volunteers. The new technology-based initiative is also being implemented with the aim of bringing the monitoring of security and patrolling activities across the district under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Police, the official said.Published - October 01, 2026 08:25 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
