California nurse says she felt weird energy from priest visiting ICU. Then he allegedly douses her with holy water: ‘Episode of the Truman Show’

Working an ICU shift requires nurses to dodge a mind-boggling array of biological fluids. They clock in mentally prepared for bodily hazards, aggressive monitors, and the occasional unpredictable code. But taking an unprovoked holy water splash isn’t usually covered in clinical orientation. Yet, California emergency room nurse Caitlin (@caitarmstrongrn_) says she ended up getting baptized with holy water without a warning after a priest visited her ICU patient. The seemingly ordinary pastoral visit allegedly escalated into a scene that felt straight out of The Truman Show to Caitlin.  She walked viewers through the unbelievable ordeal in a TikTok storytime sitting at over 92,000 views. However, she still found a silver lining in the allegedly bizarre encounter a day later. An emergency room shift turned into a sudden holy water baptism On the fateful day, Caitlin was reportedly handling an ICU assignment in the emergency department, monitoring a seriously ill patient. Because the patient was in critical condition, the family reportedly arranged for a priest to come administer bedside rites.  @caitarmstrongrn_ The shock I felt… episode of the Truman Show. #storytime #nurselife #nurses #storytelling #funny ♬ original sound – Caitlin ER RN Caitlin explained that having chaplains and clergy visit critical bays is a routine hospital occurrence. However, she remarked that something felt off as soon as the priest came in. “The priest comes in, and immediately, the vibes weren’t there,” she said. She clarified that she had nothing against faith, but the energy in the room felt distinctly strange. While the priest donned his clerical vestments and set up his materials on the bedside tray, Caitlin turned her attention back to clinical duties. One of the IV pumps on the stand had reportedly started alarming with air in the tubing. So, she stepped over to clear the line. Now, her back was turned to the priest and she was busy troubleshooting the equipment. Just then, she was allegedly doused in a blast of liquid from behind. She explained that she got so drenched that her first thought was that a bag of fluids had somehow perforated over her.  The priest delivered a silent blessing with unexpected force When she turned around, she reportedly saw the priest standing right behind with his aspergillum container, looking perfectly serene. “I needed the room’s thoughts on what just happened and where the hell the water came from. And I look, and the priest has his anointing holy water container in his hands,” Caitlin explained. What made the ambush even more absurd was the sheer contrast in application. The priest had thoroughly drenched Caitlin, leaving water visibly running through her hair and dripping down her face. But right after, he calmly turned back to the bed and gently flicked a delicate, tiny mist over the actual patient and family members. “When I tell you that my hair was wet and like dripping down my face, I guess I needed the most holy water in the room,” she joked. The utter silence from the rest of the room was equally disorienting to Caitlin.  The patient’s family reportedly didn’t bat an eye and the priest offered no explanation. This led Caitlin to feel like she was in an episode of the Truman Show, “The shock I felt… episode of the Truman Show,” she remarked in her caption. Once the ritual concluded, she recalls the priest packed up and exited the room like nothing unusual had taken place. Left standing by the beeping IV pole with damp scrubs and a dripping forehead, Caitlin simply wiped her face and finished out her shift. Waking up the following morning in an uncharacteristically great mood, she couldn’t help but laugh that maybe, against all odds, the unprompted hospital blessing actually worked.
