A sink hole in China can be far more than an empty pit. In southern China's limestone country, enormous sinkholes can contain forests, caves and isolated habitats hundreds of feet below the surrounding surface. Some are so large that Chinese geologists call them tiankeng, meaning "heavenly pit."
