Mallorca goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar has been hospitalised after a bizarre incident at the club’s training ground.A section of decor within the facility’s canteen collapsed, leaving Cuellar with a head injury.Mallorca goalkeeper Cuellar has been hospitalised after a piece of canteen decor collapsedGettyThe club confirmed that the incident occurred at Mallorca’s Son Bibiloni base.Cuellar will now remain under observation for 24 hours after being taken to hospital for treatment.The decoration inside the canteen was described as a ‘large structure’ by the Spanish second-tier side.Mallorca statementA statement released by Mallorca read: “This morning, Ivan ‘Pichu’ Cuellar suffered a serious head injury after a large structure, which formed part of the decor in the dining room at the Ciutat Esportiva collapsed.“The player has been taken to hospital for treatment and will remain under observation for the next 24 hours.”The injury to Cuellar comes as Mallorca prepare to face Girona on the road this weekend.They travel to Catalonia on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm.If Cuellar is deemed unfit to play due to the head injury, Mallorca will be left with just one available senior goalkeeper.Arnau Tenas is currently the only option between the posts for manager Luis Garcia.In addition to Cuellar’s injury, fellow stopper Lucas Bergstrom, formerly of Chelsea, is currently on international duty with Finland.Cuellar will remain under observation after the incident at the club’s training groundGettyMeanwhile, the incident follows a 1-0 home defeat to Almeria on Sunday.The result leaves them sixth in the Segunda Division after seven matches this season.Mallorca are competing outside LaLiga for the first time since 2021 following relegation last term.Who is Ivan Cuellar?Cuellar is into his fourth season with Mallorca having joined the club from Sporting Gijon back in 2023.He has also previously had spells with Eibar and Leganes and started his senior career with Atletico Madrid.Since signing for Mallorca, the 42-year-old has made just three competitive appearances for the club.Cuellar joined Mallorca in 2023 and has made three first-team appearances for the clubGettyCuellar has also been an unused substitute in each of their opening seven matches of the current campaign.The veteran stopper previously won three caps for Spain at Under-21 level at the beginning of his career.His current Mallorca deal expires at the end of the season after he signed a one-year extension in July.
