Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel comeback is becoming much more complicated than anyone expected.Disney already confirmed in August that Downey will officially reprise Tony Stark and Iron Man for two upcoming Disneyland attractions. That announcement alone was surprising considering how definitively Marvel ended Stark’s story in Avengers: Endgame (2019).But Downey isn’t simply returning to his old role.He’s also stepping into the MCU as Victor von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), creating one enormous question that Marvel has yet to answer: Why does Doctor Doom have the same face as Tony Stark?Credit: Marvel StudiosNow, the filmmakers behind the next Avengers movie have addressed that mystery, and their response certainly isn’t going to stop the speculation.Disney Already Confirmed Robert Downey Jr. Is Iron Man AgainTony Stark’s original MCU story seemingly reached its conclusion in Avengers: Endgame (2019).Stark sacrificed himself while using the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos and his army, ending a journey that began when Downey first played the character in Iron Man (2008).For years, bringing him back seemed difficult. Marvel’s Multiverse provides plenty of ways to introduce alternate versions of characters, but reversing Tony’s death could potentially change how audiences view one of the MCU’s biggest moments.Then Disney found another place for Iron Man.At D23 in August, Disney confirmed Downey will reprise Tony Stark for the upcoming Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab attractions at Disney California Adventure. Both are scheduled to debut in 2028.Avengers Infinity Defense will send guests across the Multiverse to battle King Thanos, an alternate version of the villain who won. Downey’s Iron Man will appear alongside returning Marvel stars including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Anthony Mackie as Captain America.Stark Flight Lab takes the Tony Stark connection even further.The attraction will place guests aboard gyro-kinetic pods before robotic arms lift and maneuver the vehicles. Those robotic arms will have personalities inspired by DUM-E, Tony’s robotic assistant. Downey will portray Stark for the attraction, with Mackie appearing as Captain America and Brie Larson returning as Captain Marvel.So there is no longer any question about whether Downey will ever play Iron Man again.He will.What Disney has not announced is Downey returning as Tony Stark in an MCU movie. That has fueled theories that Marvel could be deliberately drawing a parallel between Stark creating Iron Man and Doom creating his own armored identity.And one of the Russo brothers has now directly addressed the speculation.Anthony Russo Responds to the Tony Stark and Doctor Doom TheoryDuring a Q&A for Avengers: Endgame Encore (2026), Avengers: Doomsday (2026) co-director Anthony Russo was asked whether there was any “connective tissue” between Tony Stark and Victor von Doom.Russo didn’t shut down the possibility.“You tell me,” Russo responded, calling it “certainly a pregnant question.”He then made one important point clear: Marvel is treating Downey as Victor von Doom rather than simply announcing some alternate Tony Stark wearing Doom’s armor.“We are fully committed to Robert Downey as Victor Van Doom,” Russo said, adding that the curiosity surrounding the casting is intentional and that the answers are “best left for the theater.”That response leaves Marvel plenty of room.Assemble respectfully.Silence your phones when you see Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18. He also didn’t say there is no connection between the characters.Instead, Marvel appears comfortable allowing audiences to question why Downey is playing both men.Could Tony Stark and Doctor Doom Actually Meet?This is where things get even stranger.Disney has already established that Downey is willing to play Tony Stark again through its upcoming Disneyland attractions. At the same time, Marvel Studios has positioned him as Doctor Doom for one of the MCU’s biggest upcoming movies.Those are separate projects, and Disney has given no indication that the Disneyland version of Stark will cross into the theatrical MCU.Still, the Multiverse makes the possibilities considerably broader than they would have been during Marvel’s earlier phases.One popular theory argues that Doom could be an alternate-universe counterpart to Tony Stark. The new Endgame Encore footage has only added fuel to that idea because both characters are now associated with remarkably similar imagery involving the creation of their respective armor.But that’s still a fan theory.Marvel could have an entirely different explanation planned for Downey’s casting. Victor could be completely separate from Tony despite sharing his appearance. The movie could also avoid directly confronting the resemblance for much of its story.The Russo brothers clearly know audiences are asking the question.
