Bjorn Baker has established himself among Australia's leading trainers, but the lessons that helped shape his approach were gathered long before he built his own successful operation in Sydney.For the latest installment of Words to Live By, TDN's Gary King caught up with Baker to discuss the people who have influenced his career, the advice from John Oxx that still shapes his training mindset, and what he would tell the next generation hoping to make their mark in the Thoroughbred industry.TDN: Outside of family, who has been the most important mentor in your career, and why?BB: John Oxx and Christophe Clement were both very influential on me. I was fortunate to spend time with both of them and learned a lot from the way they approached training. Chris Waller has also been a big influence. He's probably a bit of a “frenemy,” but there's no doubt I've learned plenty from watching what he has achieved and how he operates.TDN: What is the best piece of advice you've ever received, and who gave it to you?BB: John Oxx used to say, “Too far, too fast and too soon.”That has always stuck with me and definitely shaped my training mindset. Horses need a good base before you ask them to go quick. You have to give them that foundation and prepare them properly. Preparation is key.TDN: What advice would you give to a young person hoping to build a successful career in the Thoroughbred industry?BB: Knowledge is power. Learn as much as you possibly can about horses and pedigrees, but also learn about people. You need to understand the people you work with and manage, as well as the owners you train for.
