The 23-year-old’s stop to deny Ferran Torres from doubling the world champions’ lead after only 16 minutes was particularly important.That Trafford was handed the start by Thomas Tuchel in the first place surprised many. While it was expected that the England manager would experiment with a handful of different options due to injury and a willingness to broaden horizons after the World Cup, few had predicted a change of goalkeeper.And yet Tuchel’s selection of Trafford to face Spain hinted at an evolution of England’s playing style. Jordan Pickford might be something of an icon for the Three Lions, earning 91 caps over nine years, but he has never been the most adept with his feet. This is where Trafford offers something different.Trafford’s senior career summary to dateIt hasn’t been easy for Trafford to get to this point in his career. He had to leave Manchester City to gain first team experience, which he received over two seasons at Burnley. When Trafford returned to City last year, it was on the promise that he would be first-choice at the Etihad Stadium. A shaky start to the season, however, pushed Manchester City into the market for Gianluigi Donnarumma.A lesser goalkeeper, and a meeker character, might have shied away from taking on another challenge after such a disappointment, but Trafford has shone for Leeds United this season, joining the Elland Road club for a reported £40m this summer. Tuchel clearly likes what he sees in the 23-year-old, and there’s a lot to admire.Trafford’s save percentage of 87% is the highest of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this season with only Emi Martínez averaging more saves per 90 minutes. The 23-year-old has been a big part of Leeds’ early-season success with Daniel Farke’s team flying high in fifth place. Some have speculated they could contend for European qualification.Trafford’s player traits compared to other keepers in Europe’s top five leaguesA strong start to the season has seemingly pushed Trafford more firmly into Tuchel’s thoughts. While Trafford was part of England’s World Cup squad, there was never any realistic chance of Pickford losing his place. He’s been a key part of the national team for the majority of the past decade.At the World Cup, though, Pickford wasn’t at his best. He might have done better in certain moments. Some fans still argue he should have saved Enzo Fernández’s goal for Argentina in the semi-final. Jude Bellingham seemed to make this point as he mouthed to Pickford “It’s [in] the middle of the goal” in the immediate aftermath.Pickford also let in a shot at the near post against DR Congo. Even when the Everton goalkeeper kept the ball out of his net, he contributed to the defensive nervousness that characterised many of England’s performances at this summer’s World Cup. Pickford wasn’t immune from criticism.For the first time in a number of years, the opportunity is there for someone else to grab the starting jersey and Trafford made the most of his chance against Spain, even if the match ended in defeat for England. If a player that starts a season well, like Traff at Leeds, [he] has the chance to prove it and to play in our style. We just need to see it at some point. We use this competition to actually give him the chance to push on.”Trafford wasn’t the only experimental selection for the match against Spain. Jarell Quansah started at right back while Myles Lewis-Skelly was deployed in central midfield. Both players demonstrated why they should be taken seriously as important figures for the future. Lewis-Skelly in particular who was missed when he was withdrawn after 70 minutes.Further opportunities will be given to other young players between now and Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup beyond that. It is, however, difficult to envisage another goalkeeper emerging with a stronger case than Trafford’s to be England’s next number one, although Dean Henderson might have something to say about that.Tuchel bore the brunt of the criticism for England’s World Cup failure.
