Walt Disney World Resort is slowly but surely transforming the iconic A-frame main building of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, which has anchored the Magic Kingdom Resort Area since the Most Magical Place on Earth welcomed its first guests on October 1, 1971. Here’s what to know before your next visit to the Central Florida Disney parks.Construction on an Iconic Building at Walt Disney World ResortCredit: DisneyOver the last several months, Walt Disney World Resort has been refurbishing the exterior of the Contemporary Tower, the main A-frame building at Disney’s Contemporary Resort that houses many of the Deluxe Disney Resort hotel’s iconic amenities, such as Chef Mickey’s, California Grill, and the Monorail station.Construction at Disney’s Contemporary Resort actually began in September 2024. However, crews didn’t begin working on the iconic A-frame building until this summer, when scaffolding, scrim, and other equipment appeared on the Magic Kingdom side of the Contemporary Tower. The facade will look largely the same when construction is complete–Walt Disney World Resort is simply restoring walls, windows, and balconies.Last month, construction moved to the Bay Lake side of the Contemporary Tower.Latest Update on Renovations at Disney’s Contemporary ResortCredit: DisneyOn October 1, WDWNT reported that scaffolding had expanded to two more architectural bays, closer to the center of the building. The existing scaffolding on the left side of the A-frame structure hasn’t changed, but beige scrim fabric now covers several balconies in that area.Green plastic barriers prevent guests from getting too close to the construction zone near the Convention Center. Hundreds of scaffolding pieces on the ground confirm that the refurbishment project on the Bay Lake side of the Contemporary Tower has a long way left to go.Credit: DisneyThe refurbishment of the original Magic Kingdom Resort Area hotel was originally scheduled to end in July 2026. Now, Walt Disney World Resort expects construction on Disney’s Contemporary Resort to be complete by “late 2027.” A warning on the official webpage for the Deluxe Disney Resort hotel reads:“Through late 2027, refurbishment work will occur in phases throughout select areas of Disney’s Contemporary Resort—including Bay Lake Tower and the Main Tower atrium. Additionally, Main Tower exterior maintenance may impact views from various locations throughout the Resort hotel and, at times, require alternate paths of travel. Guests may see or hear construction during daytime hours.”Have you noticed any other maintenance projects at Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park?
