MLS penalized Inter Miami head coach Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez and five players for violating the league's mass confrontation policy during a 2-1 loss to the Crew on Sept. 27. The infraction took place in the 26th minute. The players involved − Sergio Reguilon, Micael, Yannick Bright, Rodrigo De Paul and Daniel Pinter − all received fines along with the club and Gonzalez. Before the Crew's penalty kick goal in the 28th minute, which was awarded after video review, Miami star Lionel Messi led a group of players in protesting the call, and teammate Casemiro was shown a yellow card. Messi scored a nearly impossible free kick to even the score in the 33rd minute, and Crew Striker Jamal Thiare hit the game-winning shot in the 98th minute in front of a sellout crowd. Officials handed out six yellow cards to Miami and four to the Crew. Miami's Santiago Morales received a red card in the 96th minute after picking up two bookings in the span of four minutes.
